What you actually share
One shelf, in the members’ racks, with both your names on it. Your work-in-progress lives there between visits: wet pieces under plastic, bone-dry ones waiting for the bisque kiln, glazed ones waiting to be fired, finished ones waiting to go home.
How you divide it is entirely between the two of you. We don’t draw a line down the middle or referee it. Every shared shelf is either Purple or Black — the two biggest we make — so in practice there’s plenty of room and people just work it out. We have never had to get involved in one.
What you don’t share
Everything else. These are two separate, complete memberships. You each get your own full class allocation — six each at Purple, eight each at Black. Not six between you.
You each get your own account, your own login, your own rewards, your own texts from us. You can come on completely different nights and never once overlap. Every tool, glaze, mold, kiln and discount your level unlocks is yours individually, exactly as it would be on a standard membership.

What your half is worth, honestly
Split perfectly down the middle, here’s what each of you gets — measured against the shelves that come with a standard membership.
Half a Purple shelf holds more than an entire Yellow shelf does. Same footprint as a whole Green or Yellow shelf, but 14 inches of headroom instead of 8 or 12. Half a Black shelf holds nearly double a whole Yellow. That’s before you account for the fact that you almost certainly won’t split it exactly in half every month.
Two kinds of potter should not do this.
Half a shelf is a real constraint, and we would rather lose the sign-up than have either of you spend a year quietly irritated.
If either of you makes big work. Wide platters, tall vases, large sculptural pieces — anything that has to sit untouched for days while it dries. Half a shelf vanishes fast when a single piece is twenty inches across.
If either of you makes a lot of work. Some members finish six pieces a month. Some finish twenty-five. At the top of that range you will be stacking, shuffling and shifting each other’s greenware, and greenware does not enjoy being shifted.
If that sounds like one of you, take Black rather than Purple — half a Black shelf is 52% bigger and two inches taller than half a Purple one, and that solves it for most pairs. If it sounds like both of you, take two standard memberships with a private shelf each. It costs more. It will also annoy you a great deal less, and we would rather tell you that now than in March.
Why Green and Yellow aren’t on offer
Green and Yellow shelves are 24 by 12 inches, and 8 or 12 inches tall. Two people’s pottery does not fit on that, and pretending otherwise would just mean two frustrated members and a lot of broken greenware. The Shared Shelf Pass starts at Purple because Purple is the first shelf big enough for the idea to work.
You’re not renting a shelf. You’re getting all of this. Twice.
Most community studios are one room, one instructor, and a shelf of glaze shared by forty people. Two memberships somewhere like that would still cost you most of what this does — and on the Shared Shelf Pass, several of them cost more.
Here it buys two people the run of a 10,000 square foot studio, four instructors on the floor in every single class, and more glaze than most college ceramics departments own. Dan put more than a million dollars into this building and then priced it for actual humans — not because it’s small, but because he’d rather it be full.
“Yes, but will this actually work for us two?”
Almost certainly. Tap whichever pair sounds most like you.
Then you’re the two most normal people in the building. Most of our members walked in knowing nothing — not a technique, not a tool, not one word of the vocabulary. Arriving with someone else just means you get to be bad at it together, which is considerably more fun.
Four instructors are on the floor in every class. Neither of you needs a plan or a shred of natural talent, and if you want to make something beautiful on day one without touching a wheel, that’s exactly what our 150+ slab molds are for.
One honest note: starting at Purple with six classes each is a lot of studio for two beginners, in the best way. You’ll grow into it fast.
That’s the normal shape of this, not a problem with it. One of you found pottery and dragged the other along. Happens constantly.
Because these are two separate memberships, the keen one can use all six or eight classes and the other can use two and nobody is short-changed — you’re not splitting an allocation. The unused ones don’t expire either, so a slow month for one of you costs nothing.
The shelf sorts itself out the same way. If one of you is making three times as much work, that person quietly uses more of it. Nobody is measuring.
Completely fine, and more common than you’d think. There is nothing in this membership that requires you to be here at the same time. Two accounts, two class allocations, seven days a week to spread them across.
Some pairs deliberately alternate nights so there’s always more room on the shelf. Others come together every time. Both work.
The only thing you’ll want to agree on is the obvious one: don’t leave a giant unwrapped platter in the middle of the shelf on a night your partner is coming in.
Most pairs who share a shelf are couples. Nothing about it requires that. The membership has no idea what the two of you are to each other. Friends, siblings, roommates, coworkers, a parent and their grown-up kid, two people who met in a class here last year — all of it works exactly the same.
The couples-only product is the Shared Membership, which is a different thing entirely: one membership split between two people. This is two whole ones.
The only real requirement is that you trust each other with a shelf and you’re happy to stay on the same level. Everything else is separate.
Then slow down, because this is the one case where we’d tell you to think hard. A shared shelf is a fixed amount of room. Big work eats it, and so does a lot of small work.
If that’s one of you, take Black, not Purple. Half a Black shelf is 52% bigger than half a Purple one and two inches taller, plus you each get eight classes and every glaze in the building. That is enough for the large majority of pairs, and it still hands each of you back $660 a year.
If it’s both of you — two people each finishing twenty-odd pieces a month, or working genuinely large — take two standard memberships and a private shelf each instead. You’ll each pay $55 a month more at Black. You will also never once have to move somebody else’s drying platter, and that turns out to be worth a lot.
Fair. Here’s the honest version. We have never had to step into a shared shelf dispute. Not once. We think that’s because the two shelves this is offered on are genuinely large, and because people who choose to share a shelf are, definitionally, people who already get on.
If it does turn out not to suit you, nothing traps you. There’s no contract. Either of you can cancel in the member portal by the 24th of any month — the other simply moves to a standard full-price membership at the next charge and may be moved to a different shelf.
You’re risking one month, and saving between $480 and $660 each, every year, if it works.
Three rules. That’s the whole system.
No curriculum.
Every class is open studio. You each make whatever you want, every single time you come. Wheel, hand-building, sculpting, slab molds, glazing — switch between them mid-class if you feel like it. No assigned projects, no rubric, nobody grading your bowl.
No assigned night.
You each get 6 or 8 classes a month and zero rules about when you use them. Come together, come separately, binge them in one week or spread them out. Four instructors are on the floor in every class — two on the wheels, two on hand-building.
Nothing expires.
Miss a week? Miss three? Your unused classes sit there waiting for as long as you’re a member — and they’re counted per person, so one of you having a quiet month never costs the other anything.

The pottery wheel
Hard at first, then quietly addictive. Two or three months to get properly decent, and every hour of it does something to your brain that no app has managed yet. We have 29 wheels, so neither of you will sit waiting for one.
Hand-building & sculpting
Big shared tables, thousands of tools, and no limit except what you can picture. Your hands stay busy while the conversation wanders. This is where most of the work in this studio actually gets made — and where you’ll both end up with a table of people, not just each other.
Slab molds
Press clay into one of 150+ molds and walk out of your very first class with a genuinely beautiful bowl, platter or casserole dish. You will both look like you have been doing this for years. We are not going to tell anyone.
Switch between all three in a single class if you feel like it. Nobody here is going to stop either of you.

The case for Black, in three numbers
Black looks like the expensive one. On a shared shelf it’s the one that’s harder to argue against.
Going up to Black costs each of you $60 more a month. For that, you each get two more classes, every glaze in the building, the specialty gear nobody else touches, and — the one that matters most when two people share a rack — half a shelf that’s 52% bigger. And because the discount is a percentage, the more you spend, the more the Shared Shelf Pass hands back: $660 a year each instead of $480.
The case for Purple is simpler: it’s $26.67 a class, which is the lowest cost per class anywhere at The Clay Hole, at any level, shared or not. If six classes a month is realistically what you’ll each use, don’t pay for eight.
One rule of thumb, though. If either of you works large, or finishes a lot of pieces every month, take Black. On a private shelf the difference between the two levels is mostly classes and glazes. On a shared shelf it is also the difference between comfortable and cramped, and that is the thing people actually feel.
Purple — where most pairs start
Six classes each, a 36-inch shelf between you, roughly 550 glazes, thousands of tools including the bladed ones, every mold up to XXL, the kick wheel, the hand extruder, and first dibs on workshops and game nights. At $160 each — against $200 for the same membership on your own — you’re paying less per class than any standard member in the building, and each keeping $480 a year.
Black — for two people who are going to fill a shelf
Eight classes each and nearly everything in this million-dollar studio: the commercial wall extruder, Strong Arm centerers, Diamond Core carving and trimming tools, the high-power Skutt wheels, every glaze including the rarest and most expensive we stock, and the biggest shelf we make. At $220 each, against $275 on your own, that’s 83 cents a class more than Purple and hands each of you back $660 a year. Limited spots.

Clay and firings aren’t included. Here’s the honest math for two.
We don’t bake clay and firing into everyone’s rate, because then you’d be paying for somebody else’s habit. You pay for what you actually use. Bisque firings are free. Glaze firings run $0.05 per cubic inch with a $4.80 minimum. Clay starts at $28 for a 25 lb bag, and your discount comes off every bag either of you buys.
For comparison: a one-night pottery class around here runs $45 to $75 a head for about two hours, and you both go home with nothing finished. Two people at Purple is 42 hours of studio time a month between you, in a building with 29 wheels and 650 glazes — and you keep everything you make.

Two full memberships, one shelf, 20% off both permanently. You each get your own complete class allocation. Purple or Black only, both on the same level. Open to any two people, not just couples.

Do we split the classes between us?
No, and this is the thing people most often get wrong. These are two complete memberships. At Purple you each get six classes a month — twelve between you. At Black you each get eight. Nobody is dividing anything.
The product that splits one membership between two people is the Shared Membership, which is a different thing entirely and cheaper for that reason.
How does sharing a shelf actually work day to day?
You work it out between yourselves. We don’t draw a line down it, assign halves, or police it — and we’ve genuinely never had to get involved in one.
The reason it works is that shared shelves are only ever Purple or Black, which are the two biggest shelves we make. A Purple shelf is 36 by 16 inches with 14 inches of headroom; a Black is 48 by 16 with 16 inches. Even split perfectly in half, each of you has more room than an entire Yellow shelf. In practice most pairs never think about it after the first fortnight.
Can we be on different levels?
No. You’re sharing one shelf, and a shelf belongs to one level — so you both have to be Purple or you both have to be Black. If one of you wants six classes a month and the other wants eight, either go Black together, or take two standard memberships instead.
What if one of us needs to take a break for a few months?
Pause rather than cancel. Pausing is the one thing that does not disturb the other person. A paused member pays a small monthly fee — currently $35 at Purple, $45 at Black — and that holds the shelf, their unused classes, their spot in the studio and their rewards progress. The shared shelf stays exactly where it is, and you both keep the 20%.
Pauses are paid for in advance, always start the following calendar month, and you can pause up to four months a year. So if one of you has a busy season, a semester, a deployment or a new baby, nobody has to give up the rate. Pause a membership →

What if one of us cancels?
The other one is completely fine. Their membership continues, but it moves to the standard full price for that level from the very next charge — $200 at Purple, $275 at Black — and they may need to move to a different shelf, since the big shelves are reserved for shared use.
Cancelling is done by each person individually in the member portal by the 24th. There’s no penalty, no clawback of the discount you already had, and no awkward conversation with us. If it is only a few months you need off, pause instead — that keeps the shelf and the rate for both of you.
Is pottery just an expensive hobby?
Honestly, yes — everywhere, not just here. Clay is a raw material, glaze is expensive, kilns run on serious electricity, and a studio needs floor space, equipment and staff on the floor. Any studio charging much less than us is giving something up, and it is usually equipment, glaze range or instructors.
What we can do is give you a legitimate way to spend less without giving any of that up. That is what this is. Two people, one shelf, 20% off both memberships, permanently — $480 to $660 each, every year, that stays in your pockets. It is the biggest lever on the price of membership that is open to absolutely anyone.
Is the 20% really permanent?
Yes. Our new member offers are first-month or first-two-month promos that run out; this one never does. It isn’t a promotional rate at all — it is simply the price of the product, and it applies for as long as you both remain members.
We do have other permanent discounts, but they depend on who you are. This is the one that is open to any two people willing to share a shelf — and if either of you qualifies for the Heroes Discount Program, that comes off on top of this.
There’s a selfish reason we’re happy to be permanent about it: shared shelves let us fit more members into the building. As we get closer to capacity, we want more people on this, not fewer.
Do the teacher, military, student or senior discounts work with this?
Yes. Our Heroes Discount Program stacks on top of the Shared Shelf Pass, so the 20% and your Heroes rate both apply. That is the only discount we let stack with this one.
Three things to know. You will need to show proof of eligibility. It never applies retroactively, so ask before you are charged rather than after. And if you have used TWOMONTHS50, the Heroes code will not go on top of it during those first two months — talk to a member of staff and we will get it onto your account from month three.
Can we use NEWMEMBER50?
Not on this product. TWOMONTHS50 is the only new member code that works on the Shared Shelf Pass, and it takes 50% off your first two months on top of the 20% that’s already in the price.
One condition worth being clear about: both of you have to be first-time members. If either of you already has a membership, no new member discount is available on this product at all.
One of us is already a member. Can we still do this?
Yes, but not by clicking a button. Come talk to management at the studio — the existing membership needs to be cancelled, and then the two of you sign up fresh here together.
Because one of you isn’t a new member, no new member discount applies. The permanent 20% does.
How do we upgrade from Purple to Black later?
Together, and both at once — that’s the only way the shared shelf keeps working. You add two mid-month upgrades to your shopping cart, one for each of you, and you both move up at the same time. Downgrades start the following month, also together.
You may change membership levels up to twice each year.
Do we both have to sign the waiver?
Yes, individually. One signature doesn’t cover two people, and neither of you can participate until yours is done. It takes about two minutes online. Both of you also need to initial and sign the glaze checklist before using any glazes. Sign the waiver →
Why do you need six fields before we can check out?
Because you’re setting up two accounts, not one. We text and email each of you separately about start dates, first-day details, training videos, kiln notices and account changes — and if we only have one person’s details, the other one is invisible to us and misses all of it.
Both names, both emails and both cell numbers need to be accurate, and both of you need to be reachable at them.
Do we have to be a couple?
No. Most pairs on a shared shelf are couples, simply because couples are the people most likely to already be planning a hobby together — but the membership doesn’t know or care. Friends, siblings, roommates, coworkers, a parent and their grown-up kid, two people who met in a class here. All identical.
The couples-only one is the Shared Membership, which splits a single membership between two people. This is two whole memberships.
We make a lot of pottery, or big pottery. Is this still for us?
Maybe not, and we’d rather say so. Half a shelf is a fixed amount of room. If either of you works large — wide platters, tall vases, sculptural pieces — or finishes a lot of work every month, you will feel the constraint, and you’ll feel it most in the days when everything is drying and nothing can be moved.
If that’s one of you, go Black rather than Purple. Half a Black shelf is 52% bigger than half a Purple one and two inches taller, which is enough for the large majority of pairs.
If it’s both of you, take two standard memberships with a private shelf each. It costs more, and it is the right call. Saving $110 a month is no bargain if it means the two of you are shuffling each other’s greenware every week.
Do we have to come at the same time?
Never. Two separate memberships, two separate class allocations, seven days a week to use them. Come together every time, alternate nights so there’s more room on the shelf, or overlap once a month. It genuinely makes no difference to us or to the price.
Why isn’t this offered on Green or Yellow?
Because those shelves are 24 by 12 inches, at 8 and 12 inches tall, and two people’s pottery does not fit on that. Offering it would mean two frustrated members and a lot of broken greenware. Purple is the first shelf big enough for the idea to work.
Do either of us need experience?
None. The majority of our members arrived knowing nothing at all about clay, and arriving with someone else just means you get to be beginners together. Four instructors are on the floor in every class, and with 150+ slab molds you can each make something genuinely beautiful on your very first day without touching a wheel.
Can we cancel any time?
Yes. No contract, ever. Either of you cancels in the member portal by the 24th of any month and that person isn’t charged again — and still gets the rest of that month’s classes. It has to be done in the portal by the member themselves; a text or an email to us doesn’t do it.
Remember what happens to the person left behind: they move to the standard full price for their level at the next charge.
What’s the vibe actually like?
We’ll be straight with you. In the evening classes there will be some cursing, plenty of irreverent joking, and people sometimes bring drinks to share. If that’s your scene, you’ll both fit right in, and if you’re on the more conservative side nobody will think twice about it.
If a freewheeling environment isn’t your thing, the Monday daytime class is quieter and more reserved — no alcohol, no cursing. Dan’s mom is there. LGBTQ+ friendly across the board. The one thing we genuinely don’t tolerate is jerks.
Can we bring our own clay or glaze?
No outside clay, ever — the wrong clay can destroy a kiln, the kiln shelves, and everyone else’s work in that firing, and the member who brought it is liable for the damage. Clay is purchased through the studio, starting at $28 a bag, with $4 off at Purple or $6 off at Black on every bag either of you buys.
Glazes work differently: you may buy and use any of the 650+ glazes we carry, including ones above your level, for an upcharge.
How old do you have to be?
Members must be 18 or older. Teenagers aged 14 to 17 may attend alongside a parent or guardian who is also a member.

The membership fine print

Shared Shelf Pass terms
- The Shared Shelf Pass is two full, separate memberships for two named people, sharing one shelf. Each member receives their own complete class allocation, their own account, and full access to everything their level includes.
- It is available on Purple and Black levels only. Green and Yellow shelves are too small to be shared.
- Both members must be on the same level at all times. Split levels are not possible on a shared shelf.
- To change levels, both members must move together. Upgrading mid-month requires a mid-month upgrade to be added to the cart for each member. Downgrades start the following month. Members may change levels up to twice each year.
- The 20% discount is permanent for as long as both members remain members. It is not a promotional rate and does not expire.
- If either member cancels or has their membership ended for any reason, the remaining member moves to a standard full-price membership at their level from the very next charge, and may be required to move to a different shelf.
- Pausing is not cancelling, and does not affect the other member. A paused member holds their shelf by paying the pause fee for their level, currently $35 a month at Purple and $45 at Black, so the shared shelf stays intact and both members keep the Shared Shelf Pass rate. Pauses are paid for in advance, always start the following calendar month, and are limited to four months per year.
- Both members sign up together in a single order, and both sets of details are required before the membership can be added to the cart. Both names, emails and cell phone numbers must be accurate and belong to the two people joining, and both members must be reachable by phone and email. We manage each account separately and contact each member individually.
- Both members are required to sign the online waiver and membership agreement individually before participating, and both must initial and sign the glaze checklist and agreement before accessing any glazes.
- Existing members wishing to move onto a Shared Shelf Pass should speak to management. The existing membership must be cancelled and both members then sign up fresh on this product.
Membership, billing & cancellation terms
- Memberships renew automatically on the 25th. Either member can cancel or pause by the 24th to avoid being charged for the next month. There are no contracts, just deadlines to cancel.
- There are no refunds on memberships for any reason at any time, including for missed cancellation deadlines.
- Memberships are based on calendar months, not on your start date. If you choose to start mid-month, that month terminates at the end of that same calendar month, and you will be charged on the 25th for the following month even if you started late. Classes never expire while you remain a member, so unused classes carry forward, per member.
- Memberships are non-transferable. The two members named at sign-up are the two members covered — a place on a Shared Shelf Pass cannot be passed to a third person. To give membership as a gift, please purchase a gift certificate instead.
- We reserve the right to cancel any membership at any time should our studio rules not be kept or problems arise. Should a membership be canceled for conduct or rule breaking, there are no refunds and all items and materials on the shelf belonging to that member will be forfeit.
- Members must be 18 or older. Teens aged 14 to 17 may attend alongside a parent or guardian who is also a member.
New member offers on this product
- TWOMONTHS50 is the only new member code valid on the Shared Shelf Pass. NEWMEMBER50 does not apply to this product.
- Both members must be first-time members for any new member discount to be available. If either member already holds or has held a membership, no new member discount applies.
- The Heroes Discount Program (teachers, military and veterans, first responders, healthcare workers, students, seniors and nonprofit workers) stacks with the Shared Shelf Pass. Proof of eligibility is required, it is never applied retroactively, and it cannot be combined with a first-month or first-two-month offer — if you have used one, speak to a member of staff about applying your Heroes rate from the following month.
- New member offers are available for a limited number of new members each month, must be applied at time of sign-up, and only one new member discount can be used per account. Must start this month or next.
- Our first month deals are offered in good faith so you can give The Clay Hole an honest try. Since we lose money on that first month, memberships canceled before attending a class will be automatically reactivated. You can cancel again after you have attended at least one class.
- If you cancel during the first month of a multi-month deal, you will not receive the promotional discounts for the remaining months, and the membership will be canceled at the end of that first month.
Costs not included in membership
- Clay is available starting at $28 for a 25 lb bag, before membership discounts of $4 per bag at Purple or $6 per bag at Black. The discount applies to every bag either member buys.
- Bisque firings are free. Glaze firings are priced at $0.05 per cubic inch, with a $4.80 minimum. Multiple small pieces can be fired together provided they fit on a 6" × 6" kiln cookie.
- Absolutely no outside clay may be brought into The Clay Hole. Any member who brings in outside clay is financially liable for any resulting kiln, kiln shelf, or pottery damage.
Attendance & first-class rules
- If you start classes between the 1st and the 15th of the month, you may start any day you like, provided you have replied to let us know when you’re coming. The one exception: if you sign up less than three hours before class begins, you’ll need to wait until the next class day so we can send your info and set up your accounts.
- If you start classes on the 16th of the month or later, your very first class must be a Monday or Thursday so that you can get the tour, your shelf assignment, and your setup. The two of you do not have to do this on the same day.
- No new member may attend an open studio time without first attending a regular class and completing setup. This applies to each member individually.
- Any member who attends more classes than their membership level allows will be charged the difference for the current month and upgraded to a level that includes more days the following month. Overage charges are not refunded. Note that on a Shared Shelf Pass an upgrade affects both members, since both must remain on the same level.
- All members participating in open studio times must help clean the studio afterward, a five to ten minute commitment.
A year from now, you’ll both be a year older either way.
