It never expires
No date on it, no dormancy fee, no clock. Somebody can sit on it for a year and it is worth exactly what it was worth the day you bought it. There is also no limit on how many you buy.
Four of the amounts are a month of membership
Four of the twelve cards are set to the four membership levels exactly, so a card can be a whole first month rather than a contribution toward one. Green Level is $145 a month. The table below marks which four they are.

Three things a gift card cannot do here
These are the ones that generate a text message to the studio on Boxing Day, so they belong at the top of the page rather than the bottom.
An existing member cannot pay a membership month with it
This is the big one. A brand new member can put a gift card toward their first month. Somebody who is already a member cannot put one toward any month after that, and it is not a policy we can bend. The membership bills on its own and there is no way to apply a card to it.
An existing member can spend a card on everything else in the shop, which is most of what they buy anyway.
A membership cannot be bought in somebody else's name
Memberships are non-transferable. Everyone signs up under their own name, email and phone number, with no exceptions. So the way to give somebody a membership is a gift card, which they then use when they sign themselves up.
Unused balance is never refunded
Not at any point, including when a membership is canceled. If there is $40 left on a card and somebody stops coming, that $40 stays on the card. It keeps working forever, and it never turns back into money.
One more, about discount codes
A discount code has to go on at checkout, and gift card discounts mostly run around the holidays. A code cannot be applied afterward to a card that is already bought.

Everything the studio sells, and the first month of membership
A gift card works on anything in the shop. These are the things people actually put one toward, with what each one really costs.
A first month, at any of the four levels
Green Level is $145 for four instructed sessions a month. Yellow is $170, Purple is $200, Black is $275. A new member applies the card at checkout on their very first month.
Sold by the bag, priced by level
A 25 lb bag starts at $28 at Green Level, and every level above pays less for the same bag. Porcelain and the specialty bodies cost more. Most new members go through about half a bag a month to begin with.
Charged by volume, not by piece
Glaze firings run 5 cents a cubic inch with a $4.80 minimum, and bisque firings are free. A mug is a couple of dollars. A large planter is not.
The buckets, by the piece
A small piece is $6 and a large one is $11 at the standard rate. Purple and Black Level members have most of the buckets included already.
Something that stays on a shelf
The Glaze Bible is hand bound and printed to order, from $100 for the two sided edition up to $140 with plastic tabs. The printable University guides run $5 to $12.50. A beginner tool set is $25.
For the odd project that needs its own run
$30 a run, for approved projects that need a kiln to themselves. Members book it by asking the owner, the general manager or the studio manager.

The four highlighted rows match a membership level exactly, so the card covers a whole first month with nothing left to pay. The rest are round numbers that land wherever they land.

The membership figures above are what membership costs today. Clay and firings are charged separately from membership, here and at most studios, so a card that covers exactly one month covers exactly one month.
How it works at the other end
What the person receiving it actually does
- They get an email with a code in it. Nothing to collect and nothing to keep hold of, beyond the email itself.
- They sign up in their own name. Memberships are non-transferable, so the account has to be theirs from the start. Name, email, phone number.
- They apply the code at checkout. On a first month of membership, or on clay, or on firings, or on anything else in the shop.
- Whatever is left stays on the card. Forever, with no expiry. It comes off the next thing they buy.
If they are already a member
Tell them plainly that the card will not pay a membership month, so they do not sit on it waiting for the 25th. Point them at clay, firings, dipping glazes and the printed books instead. Those are the things a member is buying every month anyway.

Every glaze the studio stocks, with a real fired test tile for each one, hand bound to order. From $100 for the two sided edition, $120 one sided and twice as thick, $140 with plastic tabs. It is the one gift here that survives being put on a shelf.
A beginner tool set
$25, and the thing every new potter borrows for their first month before buying one. Small, useful, and impossible to get wrong.
A printable guide
$5 to $12.50 each, from slam wedging through to making your own plaster slab mold. Delivered as a file, so it works as a last minute gift when everything else has shipped too late.
