Four words that are not the same thing
Search for a pottery studio near you and the results mix four different businesses together. Knowing which is which saves a wasted drive, so every entry below is labelled.
Real clay
You start with a wet lump and make the object yourself, on a wheel or by hand. 37 of the places on this list do this. It is what most people mean when they search for pottery, and it is the hardest one to find.
Paint your own
You pick a piece that was made and fired somewhere else, paint it, and come back once the studio has glazed and fired it. 14 entries here. Genuinely good fun and a completely different activity.
Classes against open studio
A class is instructed and scheduled. Open studio is unsupervised time on your own work, and most places only sell it to people who have already taken a class with them. 17 offer some form of open studio, 16 offer a membership.
Who will fire for you
Only 7 will fire work made somewhere else. The rest decline, and they are right to: an unknown clay body that melts at the wrong temperature can destroy a kiln load and the kiln with it.

Prices. $200 for ten sessions, including a 25 lb bag of clay, studio glazes, firing, and early morning, evening and weekend studio access for the length of the course.
Fewer than fifteen seats, first come first served, and it fills quickly. They keep a mailing list.

One of the few places in the state that both teaches and fires outside work, and sells you the kiln if you decide to stop needing them.

It used to be members only and is not any more, which is the fact most out of date elsewhere on the internet.
Petersen Art Center

Prices. Tuition $130 a class, plus $40 clay including firing and $30 for tools, bought in class.
Several sections are marked full with a waiting list. They say plainly that they have had waiting lists for all pottery classes for some time.

The clearest published price list of anywhere on this page, and the only true drop in model we found.
Workshop SLC

Prices. Drop in classes and most date nights $50 to $65. Longer semester classes cost less per class.
They ask everyone to use studio clay and they fire every piece themselves, so they do not fire outside work.
Visual Art Institute

Red Kiln

A members only artists workspace and gallery. Not a teaching studio: they stopped running classes. Applicants need a ceramics background, three photographs of recent work and an in person interview, and must be 21 or over. Cone ten clay sold during gallery hours.
Prices. Clay $25 to $27 a 25 lb bag. They do not sell in bulk and do not sell glazes.
They state plainly that they do not fire work for other people, even work made from clay bought there.
Adelhardt's Pottery and Prints

Ninety minute make something sessions building mugs, bowls and trays, plus a gallery. They are looking for four or five co-op members with round the clock access to the workspace, tools, glazes and the kiln.

Their regular weekly hand building classes are on hold.

Prices. $270 for the eight week course, including 25 lbs of clay, glazes, use of the equipment, kiln firings and one open studio day a week.
The course price includes a weekly open studio day, which is unusual at this price.
Bella Rosa Pottery

Prices. Membership from $145 a month including four classes. Firing 5 cents a cubic inch with a $4.80 minimum under 125 cubic inches, bisque free. Clay from $28 a bag.
This is our studio, which is why this page exists. It is one entry on a list of many, and several of the studios above are better placed, cheaper, or closer to you than we are. Opened March 2025.

Prices. Six week wheel course $300. Private session $65 to $130. Membership $100 a month for ten hours or $200 for twenty, glaze and firing fees included.
Memberships require finishing two beginner classes first.
Kimball Art Center

Prices. Adult wheel or hand building $270 plus a $50 material fee. Introduction to hand building $180 plus $25. Youth clay $150 plus $35. Annual memberships from $55, and members get class discounts.
Material fees are separate from tuition on every ceramics class listed. Budget for both.
Beehive Pottery Studio

Prices. Open wheel $15 an hour, hand building $15 an hour, play with clay $10 an hour. Pottery painting studio fee $6 for children and $10 for adults, plus $5 to $20 for the piece. Family hand building $240 for two hours for up to six people, firing and glazing included.
Walk ins are welcome for open studio. There is a note on the page that the wheels could interfere with a pacemaker, which is a real and rarely mentioned thing.

Prices. The only prices on their site are labelled 2018, so ask rather than plan on them.
Classes were showing full with a waitlist, and they do not run in December or January. The site is served over plain http, which some browsers will warn about.

Prices. The monthly ceramics evening is $20 a person. Pottery for 6 to 11 is $65 a month for four weekly classes.
A class program rather than a studio: no open studio, no membership, and no firing of outside work. The published schedule runs through April.
Utah Center for the Ceramic Arts

Classes, open studio time, workshops and memberships, for beginners and experienced potters. The space carries seven wheels, a slab roller, a clay extruder, studio glazes, two kilns and worktables, and is available for hourly or daily rental for up to twenty five people.
A young business, opened in 2025. Their own website blocks automated readers, so everything here comes from their booking system and local listings rather than from the site itself.
Throw Art Studio

A two hour pottery wheel experience for all levels, four week beginner courses with evening studio access, kids hand building, summer camp, and group bookings for date nights and parties.
Prices. Pottery wheel experience $29.99 a wheel for up to two people, plus $9.99 to $14.99 for the piece. The four week course includes clay, glaze, firings and studio access from 6pm to 10pm Monday to Saturday.
Their menu references Lehi classes and memberships, but no Lehi address and no membership prices are published. Ask before assuming either.
Patty's Ceramics

A ceramic supply house with six kilns that fires work for the public, repairs kilns, and runs painting classes twice a week. Over fifteen thousand slip cast molds in stock, and they distribute clay, tools and kiln brands.
Prices. Painting classes $4 a class. Students bring their own paints and brushes, or buy them there.
This is greenware and bisque painting, not throwing. It is on this list because it is the clearest public firing service in Utah County: they will fire pieces up to 25 inches tall and 16 inches across.
Sundance Mountain Resort Art Studio

Prices. Open studio Wednesday through Saturday. Prices are not published on the pages we could load.
They host Clay Con West, which makes St. George an unlikely but real center of gravity for ceramics in this state.
St. George City Recreation

Prices. Wheel and adult hand building $90 resident, $117 non-resident. Preschool clay $40 or $52. Date night $50 a couple resident, $65 non-resident.

University of Utah Continuing Education

Classes at Workshop SLC and Salt Lake Pottery Studio, plus the campus sculpture building
Non credit ceramics open to anyone over 18, with no need to be admitted to the university. Wheel throwing classes are co-sponsored and held at two of the studios already on this list. A non credit hand building class meets with the regular campus course.
Prices. Wheel thrown ceramics ran $199 tuition plus a $50 materials fee. Youth ceramics sections ran $225 to $365.
The listings we could read carried past dates, so treat the prices as the shape of it and check the current catalog. The campus ceramics facility itself is not open to the public.
What we left off, and why
A directory is only worth what its omissions are worth. These 10 came up in the research and did not make the list. Several of them appear on other Utah pottery lists today.
Villa Ceramics, Orem
The website is still live and still lists classes, memberships, open studio and firing services. Yelp marks the business closed as of August 2026, and the most recent activity we could put a date on anywhere was July 2025. We would rather leave a working studio off this list than send somebody to a locked door. Call before you go, and tell us if they answer.
Iron Desert Arts, Salt Lake City
A real community ceramics studio with a real following. Their website has been password locked on every page for as long as we could check, and no public page shows an address, hours, a schedule or a price. Nothing to list yet.
FIKA Art Lounge, Spanish Fork
Bookable wheel workshops, open studio and courses, all through a third party listing. No address on any page we could load, and the Spanish Fork address associated with it also appears under a second business name.
Capital Ceramics
Their own about page gives a West Valley address, directory listings give a Salt Lake City one, a chamber listing folds them into a Provo business, and a Yelp entry at an American Fork address is marked closed. Four stories, so no entry.
Iverson Ceramics, Ogden
Listed as a community studio in a state ceramics directory. The domain would not load, and the potter's own page describes teaching ceramics at a public high school, which is not a public studio.
Two Dogs Pottery
Their about page mentions adult and children's pottery classes. No address, no schedule, and no published prices anywhere.
Clayhouse Studios, Park City, and Wildflower Pottery, Spanish Fork
Both marked closed, and neither has a website that resolves.
As You Wish Pottery
It turns up on Utah pottery lists as a Farmington business. All nine of its locations are in Arizona. It has never been in Utah.
Layton City Recreation
A hand and wheel pottery class is still sitting on the city community calendar. It ran in February 2017. There is no ceramics program in their current listings.
Brigham Young University and Salt Lake Community College
BYU has a serious ceramics facility with gas, wood, soda and salt kilns, and it is for enrolled students, apart from a summer program for school age children. We could find no ceramics program at Salt Lake Community College at all.
If any of this is wrong, we want to know. Studios open, move and close faster than any list keeps up with, and a business being left off here is a statement about what we could verify, not about the business. Corrections go to the contact page and we will fix them.
How to pick one
Everybody compares the monthly price first. It is the least useful number on the page.
- Drive time beats everything. A studio twelve minutes away gets used. A better studio forty minutes away gets used twice and then resented. This is the single strongest predictor of whether anybody keeps going.
- Ask what is included before you compare prices. One studio's $150 covers clay, glaze and firing. Another studio's $150 covers the door. Both are honest and they are not the same offer.
- Ask when you can actually work. Open studio that runs only while classes are in session, or only on two weekend mornings, is a different product from round the clock access.
- Ask how much shelf you get. Pottery is slow and work sits around for weeks between stages. Shelf space is the constraint nobody thinks about until they hit it.
- Take one class before you buy anything. A single evening costs $40 to $65 almost everywhere on this list and answers the question better than any amount of reading.
The ones people actually ask
How many pottery studios are there in Utah?
This list carries 50 places, spread from Logan to St. George and out to Moab, and it is the product of checking every name against a live page. That count includes paint your own studios, supply shops and two statewide organizations, which are all different things and are labelled as such. Counting only studios where a member of the public can make something from raw clay, it is 37.
What is the difference between a pottery studio and a paint your own place?
At a paint your own studio you choose a piece that was already made and fired, paint it, and come back for it after they glaze and fire it. You do not touch wet clay and there is no wheel. Both are good nights out. Only one of them is pottery in the sense most people mean when they search for it, so every entry here says which it is.
Where can I get my pottery fired in Utah?
Several places fire work made somewhere else. Do I need my own wheel to take a pottery class?
No. Every class on this list provides the wheel, and most provide clay and firing as well. Buying a wheel before taking a class is the most common expensive mistake in this hobby.

Instructed classes on this page run from $30 for a city recreation session in Ogden to $350 for a twelve week course in Bountiful. A single evening class is usually $40 to $65. A multi week course is usually $175 to $320, and most of them include clay and firing.

Memberships differ enormously in what they include, so compare what is covered rather than the headline number.

Yes, and they are easier to find than adult classes. Art Haus takes children from five, Beehive from eight, Kimball Art Center from eight, and Visual Art Institute runs a teen clay class for 11 to 17. Several studios run summer camps.
