We didn’t want that to be the reason people don’t come, so we put together a couple of options for couples. This is the simpler one: one membership, one shelf, one price, and it belongs to both of you. There is no rule about how you use it.

Or coordinate nothing at all. Whoever’s free Tuesday takes Tuesday, the other one takes Saturday, and somebody is always home. At Purple that’s six evenings covered between you.

Most community studios are one room, one instructor, and a shelf of glaze shared by forty people. That is what $145 a month usually buys one person. Here it covers both of you.
It buys a 10,000 square foot studio, four instructors on the floor in every single class, a private shelf with both your names on it, and more glaze than most college ceramics departments own. Dan put more than a million dollars into this building and then priced it for actual humans — not because it’s small, but because he’d rather it be full.

Almost nobody is, and it matters far less than you’d think — partly because there’s no curriculum to fall behind in. Tap whichever one is actually the two of you.
Then you’re the two most normal people in the building. Most of our members walked in knowing nothing — not a technique, not a tool, not one word of the vocabulary.
Neither of you needs a plan or a shred of natural talent. You need to walk through the door once, and four instructors take it from there. Come to your first class together if you can — it’s the same tour either way, but it’s more fun to be baffled in pairs.

This is the most common version of a couple we see, and it sorts itself out fast. Because every class here is open studio with no set project, the two of you are never on the same page anyway — nobody is waiting for anybody to catch up.
The experienced one carries on with what they were doing. The new one gets an instructor, a lump of clay and a molded bowl that looks far better than it has any right to. You compare notes in the car on the way home.
The one thing we’d say: don’t let the keener one teach the newer one. It goes badly in every hobby ever invented. That’s what the four instructors are for.
Then use it unevenly. That is completely allowed and nobody will say a word. The classes are a pool, not a rotation, and nothing anywhere says four and four or three and three.
If it runs five and one most months, that’s a perfectly good way to own this. The keen one gets a properly cheap membership. The other one still has a shelf, a studio and a standing invitation for the weeks they want it, and no guilt about the weeks they don’t.
It also has a habit of evening out on its own, usually about a week after the quieter one takes something home that they made.
Then brace them, because this studio will quietly ruin every other studio for them. Four kilns, including one big enough to fire a four-foot piece. Diamond Core carving and trimming tools. A commercial wall-mounted extruder. Strong Arm centerers. Monthly advanced wheel sessions with Dan.

They’re in very good company, and we mean that literally. Most of us walked in nervous. Dan included.
Coming as a pair helps enormously for the first few visits, and a shared membership makes that easy — use two of the month’s classes together at the start, then split the rest once the room stops feeling like a room full of strangers.
You can sit and make things beside people without a single icebreaker. Nobody will make anybody talk. There are soft couches all over the studio for when someone needs a minute away from the noise, and a studio dog named Mud whose entire specialty is people who need exactly that.
Then do that, and don’t let anyone tell you you’re using it wrong. Plenty of our shared members never come separately once. They come together every time and simply come half as often as everyone else, which is the entire point of the thing.
At Purple that’s three evenings a month, both of you, same table. One sitter to line up instead of two. And unlike almost every other date night, you go home with something.
If it later turns out one of you wants a solo Saturday now and then, you don’t have to tell us or change anything. The membership doesn’t care which way round you use it.
Four rules. That’s the whole system.
No curriculum.
Every class is open studio. You make whatever you want, every single time you come. Wheel, hand-building, sculpting, slab molds, glazing — switch between them mid-class if you feel like it. No assigned projects, no rubric, nobody grading your bowl.
No assigned night.
Your level comes with 4 to 8 classes a month and zero rules about when they get used. Binge them in one week or spread them out. Four instructors are on the floor in every class — two on the wheels, two on hand-building.
Divide and conquer.
Your classes are one pool between the two of you, and how you use them is nobody’s business but yours. Come together and an evening uses two. Come separately and it uses one. Do a bit of both. The only line is your level’s total — go over it and we’ll charge the difference and move you up a level next month.
Nothing expires.
Miss a week? Miss three? Unused classes sit there waiting for as long as the membership is active. Travel, illness, a month where life simply fell apart — they don’t burn, and they stay in the shared pool for either of you.

About 80% of people walk in wanting the wheel, and the wheel really is incredible. But most of them end up falling for the side of the studio nobody thinks to ask about — and there is a decent chance the two of you end up on opposite sides of it.
The pottery wheel
Hard at first, then quietly addictive. Two or three months to get genuinely decent, and every hour of it does something to your brain that no app has managed yet. We have 29 wheels, so you will not sit waiting for one.
Hand-building & sculpting
Big shared tables, thousands of tools, and no limit except what you can picture. Your hands stay busy while the conversation wanders. This is where most of the work in this studio actually gets made — and where most people accidentally find their people.
Slab molds
Press clay into one of 150+ molds and leave your very first class with a genuinely beautiful bowl, platter or casserole dish. You will look like you have been doing this for years. We are not going to tell anyone.
Switch between all three in a single class if you feel like it. Nobody here is going to stop either of you.

This is the part most couples underestimate. Two people fill a shelf roughly twice as fast as one, and wet work can’t be stacked. If you’ll often be making things at the same time — which is exactly what happens if you come together — start a level higher than you would on your own. Green’s 24″ × 12″ goes very quickly between two people. You can upgrade mid-month the moment it gets tight.
What unlocks in the glaze room

Purple opens roughly 550 glazes. Green opens about 33.
Tools, molds, underglazes and clay discounts scale the same way. And the last stretch is not just more glaze — the black dot shelf holds the rarest and most expensive glazes in the building.
Green — $72.50 each, and the tightest fit
The cheapest way for two people to both be members here, at about the price of one dinner out each. You bring your own tools, you’re on our basic glazes, and four classes is two evenings together a month, or a visit each every other week.
Our honest note for couples: the 24″ × 12″ × 8″ shelf is the real constraint here, not the classes. Two people’s wet work fills it fast. Fine if you’re taking turns, tight if you’re both making things at once.
Yellow — $85 each, and where we’d tell a couple to start
Neither of you goes tool shopping before your first class, real glaze access replaces the basics, $150,000 worth of studio tools opens up, and the shelf gets four inches taller — which matters far more when there are two of you stacking work on it.
Five is a slightly odd number, which turns out to be useful: two evenings together and one visit left over for whoever wants it.
Purple — $100 each, and the one most couples land on
Six classes is three evenings a month together, or six visits between you, and it’s the lowest cost per class of any level at $33.33. The shelf is double the surface of Green’s. Hundreds more glazes, thousands more tools including the bladed ones, every mold in the building, the kick wheel, the hand extruder, and first dibs on workshops and game nights.
This is the level where sharing stops feeling like rationing, whichever way you use it.
Black — $137.50 each, and nothing off limits
Eight classes and nearly everything in this million-dollar studio, including gear nobody else gets to touch: the commercial wall extruder, Strong Arm centerers, Diamond Core carving and trimming tools, the high-power Skutt wheels, and the biggest shelf we make at 48″ × 16″ × 16″. The final 15% of glazes it unlocks are the rarest and most expensive ones we stock.
Eight classes is a weekly evening together with room to spare, or a genuine weekly habit each, and it’s the only shelf we’d call roomy for two. Limited spots.

Clay and firings aren’t included — and two of you will use more. Here’s the honest math.
We don’t bake clay and firing into everyone’s rate, because then you’d be paying for somebody else’s habit. You pay for what you actually use. Bisque firings are free. Glaze firings run $0.05 per cubic inch with a $4.80 minimum. Clay starts at $28 for a 25 lb bag, and your discount grows with your level. The membership splits neatly in half; clay and firings won’t, so set the sliders to what the two of you would get through.
For comparison: a one-night pottery class around here runs $45 to $75 a head for about two hours, and you both go home with nothing finished. One date night for two costs more than two weeks of this. Six Purple classes is 21 hours in a studio with 29 wheels and 650 glazes — and you keep everything you make.
Sliders are estimates using an average-size piece. Small pieces fire for the $4.80 minimum, and several tiny ones can share a single kiln cookie. Clay and firing get billed to whoever buys them, so “each” above assumes you halve everything — most couples just pay for their own clay and split the membership.

Researchers have actually measured this. It takes about 50 hours with someone to turn an acquaintance into a casual friend. About 90 hours to make a real one. And 200+ hours to make the kind you’d text at midnight.

The questions couples actually ask.
How do you actually keep track of who’s used what?
We do it on our side, and you don’t have to think about it. Every visit gets logged against your shared membership whichever of you walks in, and only the total counts — six classes at Purple, whether that’s three evenings with both of you there, six visits by one of you, or anything in between.
There’s no booking system to wrangle and nothing to declare at the door. Turn up, say your name, and we’ll handle it. If you ever want to know where you stand, text us and we’ll tell you.
What if one of us uses more than half?
Then one of you uses more than half, and that’s entirely allowed. There is no per-person cap, only the level total, and a good number of our shared memberships run unevenly on purpose.
The only thing to watch is the total. If the two of you go over it in a month, we charge the difference for that month and move you up to the level that covers what you’re actually using, starting the next one. Overage charges aren’t refunded, so if you can feel yourselves outgrowing a level, upgrade first — you can do it mid-month.
Do we both have to sign the waiver?
Yes, separately, and there is no way around this one. It’s a personal liability document, so one signature can’t cover two people. Whichever of you hasn’t signed can’t take a class until they have. It’s the same link for both of you →

Can we just come together every time?
Yes, and a lot of our shared members do exactly that and nothing else. You come together and you come half as often as everyone else — at Purple, three evenings a month, both of you, rather than six visits between you. An evening with two of you in it simply uses two of the month’s classes instead of one.
That’s not a workaround or a lesser way to use this. For a household with one sitter and one calendar it’s often the whole reason a shared membership makes sense. Nothing to tell us in advance, and you can change your mind month to month without saying a word.
Do we each get our own account, texts and emails?
Yes — that’s exactly why the form asks for both names, both emails and both cells rather than one set. You each get your own texts, your own first-day details, your own training videos and your own waiver.
The billing and the member portal sit with whoever set the membership up, so cancellations, pauses and level changes are done by that person. Worth agreeing between you who that is before you check out.
What happens to the membership if we split up?
It happens, and it isn’t awkward for us. The membership belongs to whoever set it up and pays for it; they can carry on as a solo member at the same level, or downgrade the following month. The other person is welcome to start their own membership any time — just be aware they’d be signing up fresh, at standard rates, and the new-member discount is for first-time members only.
Anything on the shelf belongs to whoever made it. Text us and we’ll sort the practicalities out quietly.
Do either of us need experience?
Neither of you. The majority of our members arrived knowing nothing at all about clay. Beginners aren’t just welcome here, they’re the norm — and with four instructors in every class plus 150+ slab molds, you can make something genuinely beautiful on your very first day without touching a wheel.
Being at different levels to each other matters even less than you’d expect, because there’s no curriculum and no set project. Nobody is waiting for anybody.
Can we just try one class first?
We don’t offer drop-ins, date nights, or one-off classes — and that’s deliberate rather than greedy. Pottery takes weeks to move a single piece from wet clay to finished, fired object. And community doesn’t happen in one visit; it happens because the same people keep showing up.
What we do instead is make your first month cheap enough to be a real trial. With this month’s code, the two of you finding out costs $50 between you and you can cancel by the 24th.
Can we really cancel any time?
Yes. No contract, ever. Whichever of you set the membership up cancels it in the member portal by the 24th of any month, and you’re not charged again — you still get the rest of that month’s classes between you. It has to be done in the portal though; a text or an email to us doesn’t do it.
If you’re only stepping away for a while, pausing is almost always the better move: you keep the shelf, the unused classes, your rewards, and both your spots.
What if I sign up now but can’t start until next month?

Will I actually finish anything in my first month?
Honestly? Maybe, maybe not. Pottery is a process: pieces dry for days or weeks, then get bisque fired, then glazed, then fired again. Kilns run when there’s enough work to fill them, usually weekly.
Plan on roughly two months to see finished work come out the other end. If you want to speed that up, tell an instructor on day one and they’ll steer you toward pieces that move quickly.
What if I try the wheel and hate it?
Then you’ve joined the roughly 80% of people who come here for the wheel and fall in love with the other side of the studio instead. Hand-building, sculpting, and slab molds are where most of the work here actually gets made — big community tables, thousands of tools, and the conversations that turn into friendships. You can switch between all of it, mid-class, forever.
What do I bring, and what should I wear?
Bring nothing on your first day. Everything you need is here, and we’ll sort your clay out when you arrive.
Wear something you genuinely don’t mind getting clay on, and keep your fingernails short — long nails and wet clay are not friends. An apron helps. A towel helps more. Clay washes out of most things, but it will find you.
How old do you have to be?
Both members must be 18 or older. Teenagers aged 14 to 17 may attend alongside a parent or guardian who is also a member — but a teenager can’t be the second person on a shared membership, since this one is for married and co-habitating couples.
What’s the vibe actually like?
We’ll be straight with you. In the evening classes there will be some cursing, plenty of irreverent joking, and people sometimes bring drinks to share. If that’s your scene, you’ll fit right in, and if either of you is on the more conservative side nobody will think twice about it.
If a freewheeling environment isn’t your thing, the Monday daytime class is quieter and more reserved — no alcohol, no cursing. Dan’s mom is there. LGBTQ+ friendly across the board. The one thing we genuinely don’t tolerate is jerks.
Can we bring a friend?
Yes, and it’s a popular program. Either of you can — you pay for their visit and they sign the studio waiver. The one rule: neither of you can bring a guest to your own very first class, since we spend a good chunk of that giving the tour and getting you set up. How Bring a Friend works →
And to answer the obvious follow-up: no, bringing your partner as a guest isn’t a way around the class count. They’re a member, so their visit is a class.
Are there discounts for teachers, military, students, seniors, or first responders?
There are, through our Heroes Discount Program — teachers, military, students, seniors, healthcare workers, first responders, and nonprofit staff. It’s separate from the new member deal above. See if you qualify →
Can we buy this as a gift for another couple?
Not directly — memberships are non-transferable and every member has to be signed up under their own name, email, and phone number so we can text them, assign the shelf, and manage the account. We can’t make exceptions to that one.

Can I bring my own clay or glaze?
No outside clay, ever — the wrong clay can destroy a kiln, the kiln shelves, and everyone else’s work in that firing, and the member who brought it is liable for the damage. Clay is purchased through the studio, starting at $28 a bag with member discounts by level.
Glazes work differently: you may buy and use any of the 650+ glazes we carry, including ones above your level, for an upcharge. Anything from outside has to be approved case by case.
What if I hit a rough patch and can’t pay for a month?
Talk to Dan. When there’s work available he’s happy to trade a month or two of membership for help around the studio. There’s only so much of that to go around, so it’s reserved for people genuinely in a bind — but the offer is real.
Can I bring a service animal?
Professionally trained service dogs are welcome with conditions: under 25 lbs, on your lap at all times, hypoallergenic breed, current vaccinations and city licensing. Emotional support and companion animals are not permitted, and we can’t make exceptions.
We do have a studio dog named Mud, and he is very much available for anyone who needs him.

The membership fine print

Shared Membership rules
- The Shared Membership is available to married and co-habitating couples only. It is not available to two people who do not live together.
- One membership covers two named members, one shared shelf, and one level’s allowance of classes. The class allowance is a combined total for both members, not an allowance each. For example, Yellow level includes five classes per month in total, which the two members divide however they choose.
- Each visit by either member counts as one class against the shared total. If both members attend the same session, that counts as two classes.
- If the combined attendance exceeds the level allowance, the difference is charged for the current month and the membership is upgraded to a level that includes more classes the following month. Overage charges are not refunded.
- Both members must sign the online waiver and membership agreement before they can participate, and both must complete the glaze checklist and agreement before accessing any glazes. Neither member may attend a class before their own waiver is signed.
- Both members receive their own texts, emails, and required training videos, which is why full contact details are required for both people at sign-up. Billing, cancellation, pausing, and level changes are managed by the member who set the membership up.
- Both members share one shelf of the size listed for their level. Shelf sizes are the same as those on a standard membership at the same level.
- Members are named at sign-up and cannot be swapped for a different person later. To change who the second member is, the membership must be cancelled and a new one started.
- Both members must be 18 or older.
Membership, billing & cancellation terms
- You can upgrade your membership mid-month or the following month, and downgrade starting the following month. You may change membership levels up to twice each year.
- Memberships renew automatically on the 25th. You can cancel or pause any time by the 24th to avoid being charged for the next month. There are no contracts, just deadlines to cancel.
- There are no refunds on memberships for any reason at any time, including for missed cancellation deadlines.
- Memberships are based on calendar months, not on your start date. If you choose to start mid-month, that month terminates at the end of that same calendar month, and you will be charged on the 25th for the following month even if you started late. Your classes never expire while you remain a member, so unused classes carry forward.
- Memberships are non-transferable. Both members must be signed up under their own name, email, and phone number. To give membership as a gift, please purchase a gift certificate instead. We cannot make exceptions to this rule.
- We reserve the right to cancel any membership at any time should our studio rules not be kept or problems arise. Should your membership be canceled for conduct or rule breaking, there are no refunds and all items and materials on your shelf will be forfeit.
- All members are required to sign the online waiver and membership agreement before participating at The Clay Hole. All members must also initial and sign the glaze checklist and agreement before accessing any glazes. On a shared membership this applies to both members individually.
- Members must be 18 or older.
New member offers & multi-month deals
- New member offers are available to first-time members only, for a limited number of new members each month, and must be applied at time of sign-up. Only one new member discount can be used per account, and a shared membership counts as one account. Neither member may have previously held a Clay Hole membership.
- Our first month deals are offered in good faith so you can give The Clay Hole an honest try. Since we lose money on that first month, memberships canceled before attending a class will be automatically reactivated. You can cancel again after you have attended at least one class. This keeps the discount available for people genuinely exploring our community as a longer-term option.
- If you sign up for any multi-month deal, such as a BOGO offer, and then cancel during the first month, you will not receive the promotional extras or discounts for future months, and your membership will be canceled at the end of that first month. Hold off canceling if you want the benefit of the offer.
Costs not included in membership
- Clay is available starting at $28 for a 25 lb bag, before membership discounts of $2, $4, or $6 per bag by level. Clay and firings are paid for by whichever member buys them and are not included in the membership.
- Bisque firings are free. Glaze firings are priced at $0.05 per cubic inch, with a $4.80 minimum. Multiple small pieces can be fired together provided they fit on a 6" × 6" kiln cookie.
- Absolutely no outside clay may be brought into The Clay Hole. Any member who brings in outside clay is financially liable for any resulting kiln, kiln shelf, or pottery damage.
Attendance & first-class rules
- If you start classes between the 1st and the 15th of the month, you may start any day you like, provided you have replied to let us know when you’re coming. The one exception: if you sign up less than three hours before class begins, you’ll need to wait until the next class day so we can send your info and set up your account.
- If you start classes on the 16th of the month or later, your very first class must be a Monday or Thursday so that you can get the tour, your shelf assignment, and your setup. After your first class, come to whichever classes or open studio times you like. If you come on another day, we’ll need you to return on the proper day to get situated.
- No new member may attend an open studio time without first attending a regular class and completing setup. On a shared membership this applies to each member individually.
- Any membership whose attendance exceeds the level allowance will be charged the difference for the current month and upgraded to a level that includes more days the following month. On a shared membership this is assessed on the two members’ combined attendance. Overage charges are not refunded.
- All members participating in open studio times must help clean the studio afterward, a five to ten minute commitment.
A year from now, you’ll both be a year older either way.
