This studio is 18 and over, or 14 alongside a parent who is also a member. So this page is mostly about the other places: every Utah program we could confirm that puts a child in front of real clay, the exact age each one takes, what it costs, and whether a grown up has to stay in the room.
That is the whole rule, and it is worth knowing why before anybody drives to Draper. Membership here is the only way in. A fourteen year old can hold one alongside a parent or guardian who also holds one, and under fourteen there is no route at all.
Some members bring alcohol and snacks to the evening sessions, and the language is not especially filtered. Nobody is going to change that for a visiting teenager, so a parent should decide with their eyes open rather than find out in week two.
The Monday daytime class is more reserved, and alcohol is prohibited in it.
Booking the studio privately is a different thing from joining it. Three hours, up to fifteen people for $850, then $45 a person after that, and every child under twelve needs their own adult beside them. Families do book it for exactly this reason. It is the only way a nine year old works clay in this building.
For a family that wants a child in a weekly class, the honest answer is one of the programs below rather than this studio. Several of them are very good, and five of them will take a five year old.
Pick an age and a corner of the state. Every age and price below came off the studio's own site or its own booking system on 24 September 2026, and where a studio publishes nothing this page says so instead of guessing.
Kids art classes, hand built pottery
The youngest published age for real clay anywhere in Utah. No wheel at that age, which is the honest reason it can go that young.
Kids clay camp, and 8 week hand building and wheel courses
The widest age band in the state in one program, and the only place we found that lets an older sibling be the adult.

The only studio we found that publishes a height rule as well as an age rule, which is the more honest of the two for a wheel.

The cheapest monthly youth clay in Utah, and the only one you can take a single month of without committing to a term.

Their 3 to 6 band is ceramic painting rather than clay, so do not read it as the youngest clay age here.
Hand building for kids, homeschool, and wheel throwing for teens
Splitting the eight weeks into four making days and four glazing days is the clearest published answer to why a child does not come home with a pot every week.

Taught at Salt Lake Pottery Studio rather than on campus, and open to anyone without any university connection. Their catalog rotates between terms and the section page these figures came from has already been taken down, so treat the price as the shape of it and check the current listing.

No price is published for the kids classes on their own site, so ask before you plan around it.
Youth Wheel Throwing
One of the few youth programs in Utah that teaches the wheel and hand building in the same course.

Material fees are charged separately from tuition on every ceramics class they list. Budget for both.
Youth Pottery hand building, and a Teen Independent Studio
A teen independent studio is close to a membership, which almost nothing else in Utah offers to under 18s.
Summer wheel throwing camps
Fifteen pieces fired is the most generous materials allowance we found in any Utah youth program.
Private wheel sessions, and a Teen Pottery Wheel class
A home studio with three wheels and no public street address, so bookings go through their site.
Week long ceramics camps
Registration runs through an outside system and no camp price is published on their own site.
Nothing matches all of those at once. Clear the search, or widen one of the filters.
Almost every studio that runs both takes younger children for hand building and older ones for the wheel. Beehive is 6 for the clay shaping course and 12 for the wheel. Bella Rosa is 7 for hand building and 13 for throwing. Sundance takes three year olds for hand building and says plainly there is no wheel at that age.
A wheel needs a child to reach the pedal, hold a steady posture and apply real force with both arms. That is a body question rather than a maturity one.
Art Haus takes children from third grade on the wheel and adds that they have to be at least 48 inches tall. That is the only height rule we found in Utah, and it is more honest than an age, because the thing that stops a small child throwing is the reach rather than the birthday.
The Tilted Kiln takes four year olds at camp and five year olds in courses, and a parent or older sibling has to stay for 4 to 8 at camp and 5 to 9 in the courses. Sundance requires a parent for the 3 to 6 class. Beehive needs an adult with anyone under 14 at a monthly event. Art Haus is the opposite and asks parents to drop the children off.
SCERA sells single months and says there is no semester commitment. Kal's Clay and Crafts sells a whole semester of seventeen sessions at once. Bella Rosa sells eight weeks. A four day summer camp at Throw Art Studio is $199 and finishes inside a week. Match the shape to the child before the price.
The age shown is the youngest published age for a real clay program at that studio. Several of them run older bands as well, which the cards above spell out.

Sundance Mountain Resort publishes no price for its 3 to 6 class, Workshop SLC publishes none for its kids classes, and Sunstone publishes none for its camps. Those are gaps on their pages, not gaps in this one.
These are real studios running real classes. They simply do not publish an age for children anywhere we could read it, so putting a number next to them would be inventing one. Call them. Some of them will be exactly right for your kid.
A kids class session at $90 for four weekly one hour classes. No age is published on their current classes page, and two older pages on the same site give ages that are years out of date.
A try it session at $60, and five week classes. No age or child policy appears anywhere on their site.
Their own site lists kids classes. The schedule runs on an outside booking system that publishes nothing readable, so no age and no price could be confirmed. The University of Utah youth ceramics course for ages 7 to 14 is held at this address.
Ceramics classes run in seasonal five week sessions and a child classes page exists, but it lists nothing and no age appears on their site.
Their six week wheel class is published as all ages and all experience levels with no number attached. No dedicated youth class is published.
No youth program is published anywhere on their site or in their booking system. Their classes are seven week adult courses.
Their kids classes are drawing and painting rather than clay. Students in grades 9 through 12 may take any adult class, which is their route into pottery for a minor.
Wet clay asks a small child to keep two hands doing different things while something collapses in front of them. Painting a ready made bisque shape asks for one brush and a color. Both end with a fired object on a shelf, and only one of them ends in tears at that age.
Every Color Me Mine in Utah charges a studio fee for each painter plus the price of the piece, and several of them charge $5 rather than $8 for a child twelve and under. Pieces start between $8 and $17 depending on the town. Beehive Pottery Studio in Heber City charges $6 for a child. Pottery Night SLC charges a $5 studio fee. Paint Fusion in Park City runs the same format alongside glass fusing.
Paint your own studios glaze and fire the piece for you and hold it for collection, usually five to ten days. Nothing goes home on the day, which is worth explaining to a four year old before rather than after.
At fourteen a teenager can hold a membership here alongside a parent or guardian who also holds one, and the two of you learn in the same room at the same time. At eighteen they can hold one on their own.
Both of you are full members. A parent at $145 and a teenager at the same, each with four instructed sessions a month at Green Level. The evening room is still the evening room, so read the paragraph above first.
More reserved, and alcohol is prohibited in it. For a parent bringing a fourteen year old, this is the session to start with rather than a Friday evening.
There is no membership route under fourteen and there are no one-off classes here. A private party takes six year olds. Beyond that, the twenty two programs listed above are the answer, and several of them are excellent.
Not under fourteen. The minimum age is 18, or 14 if the teenager attends alongside a parent or guardian who is also a member. The one exception is a private party, which takes ages six and up with every child under twelve accompanied by their own adult.
Three, at Sundance Mountain Resort Art Studio, for hand built pottery with a parent in the room and no wheel. The Tilted Kiln in St. George takes four year olds at clay camp and five year olds in its eight week courses. Art Haus in Salt Lake City takes kindergarteners for hand building.
Between about $40 and $480 depending on how long the program runs. SCERA Art Studios in Orem is $65 a month for four weekly classes. St. George City Recreation is $40 for residents for a four week preschool class. Kal's Clay and Crafts in Midvale sells a whole semester of seventeen sessions for $480.
Usually twelve or thirteen, though it varies. Beehive Pottery Studio and Pottery Night SLC put the wheel at twelve. Bella Rosa Pottery and Pinch and Purl put it at thirteen. Art Haus takes third graders on the wheel if they are at least 48 inches tall, which is the only published height rule we found in the state.
Yes. Throw Art Studio in Provo runs four day wheel camps at $199 a child. Beehive Pottery Studio in Heber City runs one day clay camps at $35 and four week wheel camps at $160. The University of Utah runs ten four day camps for ages 7 to 14. Sunstone Pottery and Supply runs week long camps for ages 10 to 16.
It depends on the studio and the age. The Tilted Kiln requires an adult or older sibling for ages 4 to 8 at camp and 5 to 9 in courses. Sundance requires a parent for its 3 to 6 class. Beehive requires an adult with anyone under 14 at monthly events. Art Haus asks parents to drop off and collect.
At a few places. Ogden City Recreation runs a teen independent studio for ages 12 to 17. Visual Art Institute gives its 11 to 17 class 12 to 15 hours of open studio a week. Beehive opens its open wheel to experienced potters from 14. At The Clay Hole a 14 year old can hold a membership alongside a parent who also holds one.
The clay itself is, and studios that teach children work wet and clean up wet for a reason: dry clay dust is the part worth managing. Kilns are run by staff, never by students. The realistic risks in a youth class are a sharp trimming tool and a hot kiln room, both of which a teaching studio supervises.
A nine year old cannot join this studio and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Twenty two programs across Utah will take one, several of them for less than a month of membership costs here, and two of them will take a child who is barely out of nursery. When that child turns fourteen, a parent can bring them here and learn alongside them.
