Natural drying first. The lamps are the backup, and they work.

The hanging heat lamps pull water out of clay fast, from the side that faces them. That is a real tool with a real job here: stiffening a piece on a slab mold in ten to twenty minutes so it comes off the mold and goes on your shelf before you leave, or firming a wall, a slab or a section when you are short on time. It is also the fastest way in the building to split a piece, because clay shrinks as it dries and the mold under it does not. Every rule on this page comes down to one habit: let clay dry on its own whenever you can, use the lamps when you cannot, and never walk away from them.

Why this is written down and filmed, both.

Nobody films heat lamps, which tells you something. What gets filmed is the same physics with a different tool: a potter with a torch on a wall that is about to fold, warming it for thirty seconds and going back to throwing. The lamp is that torch, slower and wider, and the rules are identical. So the videos below show heat being applied to wet clay on purpose, and this page carries the part the videos leave out, which is the slab mold rule, the timing, and the list of things heat should never be used on.

Read the jobs and the non-jobs first, so you know what you are watching for. Then watch a torch stiffen a pot. The words give you the judgement and the video gives you the timing, and you remember both better together than apart. Then go set a timer and stand next to the lamp with a piece that actually needs it.

The whole idea

Natural drying first. The lamps when there is no time. Ten to twenty on a slab mold, stay with it.

A heat lamp dries the surface facing it, fast. Let clay dry on its own whenever there is time, because even drying is what stops cracks. When there is not, the lamp is the backup: a piece on a slab mold takes ten to twenty minutes, checked every five and turned, and comes off the mold the moment it holds its shape, because the clay shrinks as it dries and the mold does not, and a few minutes too long splits it. Anything not on a mold takes short bursts, turned, stopped when the surface goes matte. A cotton sheet over it afterwards lets the skin and the core even out. A minute rarely hurts anything. Fifteen or twenty unattended can.

The physics

What a lamp actually does to a wet piece, in three paragraphs.

Clay dries from the surface. Water at the skin evaporates, water from deeper migrates outward to replace it, and the skin shrinks as it loses water while the inside, still wet, has not shrunk at all. In open air that happens slowly enough that the inside keeps up. Under a lamp it happens fast on the face that is lit, and the inside does not keep up: you get a stiff, shrunken skin over a soft wet core, on one side of the piece.

For a thin wall, a slab, or a piece that only needs to hold its shape long enough to move, that skin is exactly what you want. Turn the piece so every face gets the same skin and you have something that stands up, or lifts, or comes off a slab mold, at the cost of nothing. Natural drying would have done the same thing in a few hours; the lamp does it in minutes, and on a class night that is the difference between finishing and leaving a soft piece on a shared mold.

The trouble starts when the shrinking meets something that does not shrink. A slab mold is plaster or bisque or plastic and it stays exactly the size it is. A piece stiffening on it shrinks as it dries, and once the skin has tightened onto a hump mold or pulled away from a slump mold and kept going, the piece splits along the tightest point, usually the rim or a corner. That is the whole reason the slab mold rule below has a clock on it. A lamp changes the surface, not the piece. Clay shrinks. Molds do not. Stay with it.

What they are for

Stiffening a piece on a slab moldThe main use here. A slab pressed onto one of our slab molds is too soft to lift for hours; ten to twenty minutes under the lamp and it comes off, holds its shape, and goes on your shelf before you leave. This is the job the lamps mostly do on a class night.
Desaturating soft clay so it will take workA slab too wet to cut cleanly, a coil pot too soft to take the next section, a lump of reclaim that came out of the bag like pudding. A few minutes, turned, brings it to the stiffness the next step needs.
A wall that is foldingMid-throw, a tall or wide form starts to slump. A minute or two under the lamp, turning, gives it a skin that holds while you finish the pull or the shaping. The oldest use, and still a good one.
A rim, a flare, or a slab edgeA bowl rim flared too wide, a plate edge dropping, a lid flange going soft, a slab edge that needs to stand for a join. Stiffen the edge, shield the rest.

Five things that look like jobs and are not

Drying a finished pieceA finished piece is the one thing with nothing to gain and everything to lose. It goes on a plastic bat under a cotton sheet and takes the days it takes. The lamp gets it to the shelf sooner and cracks it there.
Anything with a handle or a joinThe handle is thin and the wall is thick; the lamp widens that gap. Handles are the reason cotton sheets exist.
Getting to bone dry before a bisqueA lamp makes the outside look dry while the inside is not, and that piece explodes in the kiln. Bone dry is days on a shelf, checked against your cheek.
A thick base or a solid lumpA skin over a wet core, on the one part of the piece with the most water in it. This is the crack that shows up three days later and gets blamed on the clay.
Walking awayA minute unattended is fine. Fifteen or twenty unattended on a mold is a split piece and a mold somebody else was waiting for. If you have to step away for more than a few minutes, take it out.

Step one

Is there time to let it dry on its own? If yes, do that.

Time, not impatience. Before a piece goes anywhere near the lamp, ask the only question that matters: is there time to let it stiffen naturally? A slab on a slab mold firms up on its own in a few hours in this building; a thrown wall stiffens in twenty minutes of open air; a coil pot takes its next section tomorrow. Natural drying is even drying, even drying is what stops cracks, and every page about drying on this site says so. If you can come back, come back. The lamp is for the night you cannot: the class is ending, the piece is on a shared mold, the shelf is waiting, and soft clay does not travel.

The second honest question is what else is on the piece. A handle, a foot, a join, a thick base, a sprig, a lid sitting on a gallery: any of those means the lamp is off the table no matter how soft the rest is. Shield the attachment with a bat or a hand and stiffen only the part that needs it if you must, and know you are taking a risk with the join.

A heat gun does the same job faster and more locally, and the same rules apply doubled: closer, hotter, and a skin in seconds. The studio has heat guns at the tables. Treat the gun as a lamp you can point, and never point it at a base or a join.

Be real about the risk, too. A minute under the lamp has never ruined a piece. What ruins pieces is the mold left under the lamp for twenty minutes while its owner went to glaze something. The danger is not the tool; it is forgetting it.

Step two

Ten to twenty minutes on the slab mold. Check at five, ten, fifteen. Off the moment it holds.

Check at five, ten, fifteen. Off the moment it holds. Bring the mold to the lamp with the piece on it, set a timer for five minutes, and stand it a forearm’s length under the heat. At five minutes, turn the mold a quarter turn and touch the piece: a knuckle pressed gently into the wall should leave a mark and spring back. At ten, turn again and test again. Somewhere between ten and twenty minutes the piece will hold its shape when you ease an edge off the mold, and that is the moment it comes off, onto a plastic bat, whether the timer says twelve or nineteen. The number is a range because slabs differ in thickness and molds differ in size; the test is the edge lifting clean.

Check at five, ten, fifteen. Off the moment it holds. Mold under the lamp a forearm’s length away, timer set for five minutes. At five, quarter turn and a knuckle test. At ten, again. Somewhere between ten and twenty minutes an edge lifts clean off the mold, and that is the moment it comes off onto a plastic bat, whatever the timer reads. Past twenty, the clay has shrunk and the mold has not, and the piece splits at the rim or a corner.

Here is why the clock matters. The mold is plaster or bisque or plastic and it does not shrink. The piece on it shrinks the whole time it dries, and it shrinks fastest under the lamp. On a hump mold, where the clay sits over the outside, the piece tightens onto the form like a shirt shrinking on a hanger, and past a certain point it tears, usually at the rim. On a slump mold, where the clay sits inside, the piece pulls away from the walls, which is what you want, but a rim that has gone stiff while the base is still soft cracks when the base finally shrinks. Either way, twenty minutes is the edge and thirty is a split.

Turning matters as much as the clock. One face under the lamp for fifteen minutes is a piece that dried on one side, and a piece that dried on one side warps toward the lamp and cracks on the far side. A quarter turn every five minutes is the whole habit. Shield a thick rim or a thick base with a bat if one part is getting ahead.

When it comes off, it goes on a plastic bat under a cotton sheet, and the mold goes back to its numbered spot, cleaned. That is the sequence the clean-up page asks for, and the lamp is what makes it possible on a short night. Our slab mold lesson covers the rest of the mold work.

Step three

Anything not on a slab mold takes seconds to a couple of minutes, turned, and stops at matte.

Count, turn, count, turn. A wall on the wheel, a slab on a bat, a coil pot that needs to take the next round: none of these has a mold under it fighting the shrink, so they need much less time and much more turning. Hold the piece on its bat a forearm’s length from the lamp with the surface that needs stiffening facing the heat. Count to thirty, quarter turn, count again. After a full pass, touch it. If it holds its shape, it is done. If not, one more pass, and then stop whether it is done or not; a wall that has not stiffened after two or three minutes needs to be collared in or cut down, not cooked.

Count, turn, count, turn. Piece on its bat, the surface that needs stiffening a forearm’s length from the lamp. Count to thirty, quarter turn, count again, and touch it after a full pass. Wet clay shines, a forming skin goes matte, an over-dried skin goes pale: stop at matte. A minute or two is plenty; more than that, collar it in instead.

Read the surface, not the clock. Wet clay shines; a forming skin goes matte; an over-dried skin goes pale, then chalky at the edges. Matte is the signal. A knuckle should press in and spring back. If the surface is pale on one side and shiny on the other, you turned too slowly. Thin rims go matte first, always, so shield the rim with a hand on the last pass and let the belly catch up.

Shield what should not be heated. A bat held between the lamp and the base, a hand cupped in front of a join, a folded rag over a thick foot. The lamp cannot tell the wall from the base; you can. On the wheel, a slowly turning wheel under a lamp does the rotating for you, and that is the one place the lamp works with no hands on the piece.

Slabs on a bat read differently: the top face dries and the face against the bat does not, and the slab curls up at the edges toward the lamp as the top shrinks. Step four

A sheet over it for half an hour, then carry on.

Cover it, then continue. A piece that has just come off the lamp has a dry skin over a wet core, and it is not stable yet. Keep working on it immediately and the skin softens as water migrates outward and the piece goes floppy again, which feels like the lamp did nothing. Set it on the shelf uncovered and the skin keeps drying while the core is still wet, and you have made the crack you were trying to avoid. The answer is a cotton sheet, loosely, for half an hour to an hour. Under the sheet the surface stops losing water, the core sends its water outward, and the whole piece settles at one even stiffness that will actually hold.

Cover it, then continue. A lamped piece has a dry skin over a wet core. A cotton sheet loosely over it for half an hour lets the two even out into one piece that holds. Then finish the work, or cover it properly for the night; a lamped piece never goes on the shelf uncovered.

After the sheet, finish what you were doing. If the job was a slab off a slab mold, it is ready to trim, join or texture. If it was a wall that needed to stand for the last pull, take the pull. If it was a build that needed to take more coils, add them, and keep the new join soft with a damp sponge.

Then the piece dries like any other piece, which means slowly and evenly: a plastic bat, a cotton sheet, and days. A lamped piece is not a head start on drying. If anything it wants a sheet more than a piece that was never lamped, because its surface has already been pushed ahead of its core once. Our sheets and bags lesson is the next page to read.

For brush-on glaze there is one more use, and it has its own rules. A coat that has to dry before the next can go on will dry in a minute under a lamp instead of ten in the air. Stop the moment the sheen goes matte, keep the piece turning, and never let the coat go chalky; a glaze coat driven too dry by heat cracks like mud and crawls in the kiln. Four things to know here

Let a piece dry on its own whenever there is time; the lamps are the backup when there is not. On a slab mold, ten to twenty minutes checked every five is about right, and the piece comes off the moment it holds, because the mold does not shrink and the clay does. Stay with it. Afterwards, plastic bat and a cotton sheet like any other piece, and the mold cleaned and back on its numbered spot.

What they are not for

Drying a finished piece, a thick base, anything with a handle or a join, or anything you plan to walk away from. A piece found sitting under a lamp with nobody at it will be moved out from under it, and it should be.

Questions people actually ask

The ones that come up under the lamps.

Can I use the heat lamp to dry my piece faster?

To stiffen it, yes, when there is no time to let it firm up on its own. To dry a finished piece, no: a lamp dries the surface facing it while the inside stays wet, and that skin cracks when the inside finally shrinks. Finished pieces go on a plastic bat under a cotton sheet.

How long on a slab mold?

Ten to twenty minutes is about right. Set a timer, check at five, ten and fifteen with a quarter turn each time, and take it off the moment an edge lifts clean. Past twenty the clay has shrunk and the mold has not, and the piece splits.

Why did it split on the mold?

Too long under the lamp. The clay shrank as it dried and the mold stayed the size it was, so the piece tightened onto a hump mold or stiffened unevenly in a slump mold until it tore, usually at the rim or a corner. A timer and a quarter turn every five minutes is the whole fix.

Will one minute ruin a piece?

Almost never. A minute under the lamp stiffens a surface and nothing else. What ruins pieces is fifteen or twenty minutes with nobody watching, especially on a mold. The danger is not the tool, it is forgetting it.

How long for something not on a mold?

Seconds to a couple of minutes. Thirty seconds a face, turning, stop when the surface goes matte and the piece holds its shape. If a thrown wall has not stiffened after a few minutes, collar it in instead.

Is a heat gun the same thing?

Same physics, closer and hotter. Everything on this page applies with the times cut in half. Never at a base or a join, never left running.

Can I dry a glaze coat under it?

Briefly. Until the sheen goes matte and no longer, turning the piece the whole time. A coat driven chalky by heat cracks and crawls. A hair dryer on low is the gentler tool for the same job.

Why did it go floppy again after the lamp?

The skin softened as water from the core moved outward. Put a cotton sheet over it for half an hour after the lamp and the piece settles at one even stiffness that holds.

Will the lamp get my piece to bone dry for the bisque?

No, and it is dangerous to think so. It makes the outside look dry while the inside is not, and that piece explodes in the kiln. Bone dry is days on a shelf, checked against your cheek.

That is the whole rule

Dry it naturally when you can. When you cannot, ten to twenty on the slab mold, and stay with it.

A minute under the lamp has never ruined anything. Fifteen minutes on a mold with nobody watching has ruined plenty. The lamps are there for the night you are out of time and the piece is still too soft to leave, and used that way they save more pieces than they cost. Just remember that a slab mold does not shrink, and the piece on it does, and the only thing between those two facts is you checking on it.
