Pottery in Humid vs Arid Climates
Humidity is the variable almost no pottery instruction mentions, and it quietly decides how your work behaves. The same clay, the same technique and the same schedule produce different results in Phoenix and in New Orleans. Neither climate is better. They hand you opposite problems, opposite advantages, and opposite advice, which is why so much of what you read online does not seem to work where you are.
Dry air cracks work by drying the surface faster than the middle can keep up. Humid air will not let work dry at all, which stalls everything and risks explosions in the bisque. Work out which problem you have, then apply the opposite fix.

One mechanism, two opposite problems
Clay shrinks as water leaves it, and water leaves from the surface first. Everything about climate comes down to how fast the air pulls that surface water away.
In dry air the surface runs ahead of the interior. The outside shrinks around a middle that has not shrunk yet, the clay goes into tension, and it cracks.
In humid air almost nothing evaporates. Work stays leather hard for days, schedules stall, and pieces that look dry are not, which is how bisque firings go wrong.
Same physics, opposite symptoms, opposite fixes. Most bad advice online is the right fix for the other climate.
Both routines
If your air is dry
- Cover everything the moment you stop, loosely, rims and handles first.
- No fans, no heat, no sun. All three accelerate the surface drying that causes cracking.
- Even up thick and thin before it dries, and join at matching dryness.
- Uncover in stages rather than all at once.
If your air is humid
- Move air across the work, with a fan or an open window. Here that is the fix rather than the danger.
- Get work off the table and onto racks so air reaches every side.
- A dehumidifier earns its keep if you work year round.
- Be strict about bone dry. Check with your cheek, not your eyes, because a piece that looks dry usually is not.
Three things to know
Indoors is its own climate
Heating dries a room far below the outdoor humidity, and air conditioning does the same. A studio in a humid city can be dry in winter, and the reverse happens too.
Advice has a hometown
When you read a drying tip, work out whether the writer is fighting drying or fighting slowness. Following the wrong one costs you pots.
Neither climate is better
Dry air means fast turnaround and reliable bisque firings. Humid air means forgiving trimming windows and far fewer cracks. Both have real advantages.
Why humidity changes everything
- Clay shrinks as it dries, by something in the region of a twelfth before it ever reaches a kiln, and again in the firing. That shrinkage is the source of every problem on this page.
- Drying happens from the surface inward. Water leaves the outside first and has to travel from the middle to replace it, which takes time.
- Humidity sets how fast the surface loses water. Dry air pulls it off quickly; humid air barely pulls it at all, because the air is already close to holding as much water as it can.
- Too fast and the piece tears itself. The surface shrinks around an interior that has not shrunk yet, and clay is weak in tension, so it opens a crack at the thinnest or most exposed point.
- Too slow and nothing progresses. The piece stays workable, which sounds pleasant, and it also means handles cannot go on, trimming cannot happen, and nothing reaches bone dry on any useful schedule.
- Temperature matters alongside humidity. Warm air holds more moisture than cold air, so the number that governs drying is relative humidity rather than either one alone.
- Air movement matters as much as either. Still air right next to a pot becomes locally humid and slows itself down, which is why a fan changes drying so dramatically in both directions.
The single most useful habit
When you read a piece of drying advice, work out which problem the writer has. Somebody recommending a fan is solving slowness. Somebody telling you to double-wrap everything is solving speed. Both are right at home and wrong in the other place.
The two climates, side by side
The same stages of the same process, in the two kinds of air.
Throwing
Dry: the rim stiffens while you work, and a tall piece can go leathery at the top before the base. Humid: clay stays soft and forgiving, and walls collapse more easily because the water never leaves.
The trimming window
Dry: narrow, sometimes a few hours, and a piece left overnight is often too hard. Humid: generous, sometimes days, and pieces can be returned to the same stage repeatedly.
Handles and joins
Dry: the two parts race apart in dryness, so attach the same day and cover the join. Humid: easy to match dryness, and slip takes longer to set up.
Cracking risk
Dry: the main hazard, especially rims, handles and flat work. Humid: much lower, because the surface never gets far ahead of the interior.
Reaching bone dry
Dry: fast and reliable, sometimes faster than you want. Humid: slow and uncertain, and the main reason bisque firings fail.
Bisque risk
Dry: low, provided nothing was rushed. Humid: the primary danger, since a piece that seems dry can still hold enough water to explode.
Glazing
Dry: bisque drinks glaze fast, so dips are short and coats build quickly. Humid: bisque holds moisture and absorbs more slowly, so the same dip lands thinner.
Glaze drying
Dry: a glazed pot is touch dry almost immediately. Humid: it can stay damp for hours, which delays wax, wiping and loading.
Storage between sessions
Dry: plastic is mandatory for anything unfinished. Humid: plastic invites mold on work left for weeks, so ventilate instead.
Reclaim and slop
Dry: buckets dry out and slabs stiffen quickly, which speeds reclaiming up. Humid: reclaim takes far longer to firm up and can sour if left wet.
Plaster and bats
Dry: plaster pulls water out fast, which helps reclaim. Humid: plaster saturates and stops working until it dries out itself.
The equipment you need
Dry: plastic sheeting, damp boxes, and discipline about covering. Humid: fans, racks and often a dehumidifier.
Working in a dry climate
Everything here is a version of one idea: slow the surface down until the interior can keep up. This is the half that applies to our studio in Utah.
- Cover the moment you stop, not at the end of the session. Twenty minutes uncovered is enough for a rim to start running ahead of the wall.
- Cover rims and handles heavily. They are thin, exposed on all sides, and they crack first.
- Loose plastic, not tight. A tent rather than a wrapping, because plastic pressed against wet clay leaves damp patches that stay soft while the rest dries.
- Never a fan, and never near heat. Vents, radiators, sunny windows and anything warm all accelerate exactly the wrong thing.
- Attach handles the same day. The window where a pot and a handle match in dryness is short here.
- Even up thick and thin before drying starts, because differing thicknesses dry at different speeds and the join takes the stress.
- Uncover in stages. Loose plastic, then a gap, then off. Going from sealed to open undoes the whole thing in an afternoon.
- Use a damp box for long builds, a sealed container with a plaster or damp base, which holds a piece workable for weeks.
Working in a humid climate
Here the enemy is time. Nothing progresses, and the danger moves from the drying shelf to the kiln.
- Move air across the work. A fan on low, aimed past rather than at a piece, is the standard tool here and the single biggest change you can make.
- Get pieces onto open racks so air reaches underneath. A pot on a solid board dries from five sides instead of six, and in humid air that difference matters.
- Run a dehumidifier if you work year round. It changes the studio more than any other purchase.
- Do not wrap anything you are not returning to. Plastic is for holding a piece workable, and in humid air it holds moisture long enough to grow mold.
- Be strict about bone dry. This is the real hazard here. A piece that looks and feels dry can still hold enough water to come apart in a bisque.
- Add a preheat or a long low hold to the start of a bisque, and give thick work extra time at the bottom end.
- Expect thinner glaze coats. Damp bisque absorbs more slowly, so a dip that gives a good coat in dry air gives a starved one here. Dip longer or add a coat.
- Warm your bisque before glazing if coats keep coming out thin. Even mild warmth drives moisture out and restores absorbency.
What each climate gives you
Both have real advantages, and potters in each tend to envy the other for the wrong reasons.
Dry: fast turnaround
Throw on Saturday, trim on Sunday, bone dry within the week. Work moves through the studio at a pace that humid climates cannot match.
Dry: reliable bisque
Getting to genuinely bone dry is easy, so the explosions and blowouts that plague damp studios are rare.
Dry: crisp surfaces
Carving, faceting and sharp detail hold their edges well, because the clay reaches the right firmness quickly and predictably.
Humid: a forgiving clock
A piece left overnight is still where you left it. You can plan a build across several sessions without fighting the calendar.
Humid: far fewer cracks
The single biggest source of lost work in dry studios is mostly absent, because the surface never races the interior.
Humid: big work is easier
Large pieces, flat plates and long builds all benefit from slow even drying, which is exactly what humid air provides for free.
Seasons, and the room you are in
Almost nobody works in the outdoor climate. The room decides, and rooms swing further than the weather does.
- Heating makes any room dry. Cold air holds little moisture, and warming it drops the relative humidity further. A heated studio in January can be drier than a desert in July, wherever you live.
- Air conditioning does the same. It removes moisture as a side effect of cooling, so a humid-climate studio can be surprisingly dry all summer with the system running.
- Which means humid climates get a dry season indoors, and potters there are often caught out by cracking in midwinter after a year without it.
- And dry climates get a humid patch, during a rainy stretch or a monsoon season, when work suddenly refuses to reach bone dry on the usual schedule.
- Your home is a third climate. Taking work home means a heated room, a sunny windowsill or a damp basement, all of which behave differently from the studio.
- Track it rather than guessing. Conditions change more often than people expect, and the same shelf behaves differently in March and August.
Working out which you are in
The label on the map matters less than the reading in your studio, and the reading changes with the season.
- Buy a humidity gauge. A few dollars, and it turns guessing into knowing. Put it where your work actually dries.
- Below about thirty percent, treat it as dry. Cover everything and assume nothing survives being left out.
- Above about sixty percent, treat it as humid. Move air, use racks, and be strict about bone dry before firing.
- In between, you have it easy, and normal advice mostly works without adjustment.
- Watch the clay as well as the gauge. A rim going pale while the belly stays dark means the surface is running ahead, whatever the number says.
- Use the cheek test for bone dry, in either climate. Press a piece to your cheek: cool means water is still leaving it, room temperature means dry. Hands are too insensitive and color is unreliable.
- Time one piece deliberately. Note how long a mug takes to go from thrown to bone dry. That single number tells you more about your studio than any general rule.
What goes wrong in each
Dry: a crack down from the rim
The rim shrank ahead of the wall. Cover the top of the pot, and do it the moment you stop working rather than at the end of the session.
Dry: a handle pulled away
The handle dried faster than the pot, or the two were at different dryness when they met. Cover handles specifically and join at matching stages.
Dry: a plate that curled
Flat work with the top exposed and the bottom against a board. Dry it between boards with paper, turning it over partway through.
Humid: it exploded in the bisque
Not dry, despite looking dry. Use the cheek test, add a preheat, and give thick work far longer than the calendar suggests.
Humid: mold on stored work
Wrapped in plastic and left. Mold does not harm the fired result, though it stains and smells. Ventilate rather than sealing anything you are not returning to.
Humid: glaze coats too thin
Damp bisque absorbs slowly, so the usual dip lands starved. Dry or gently warm the bisque first, or dip longer.

Why does clay crack in dry air?
The surface loses water faster than the middle can resupply it, so the outside shrinks around an interior that has not shrunk yet. That puts the clay in tension, and clay is weak in tension.
Should I use a fan on drying pottery?
It depends entirely on your air. In a humid studio a fan is the standard fix and the biggest single improvement available. In a dry studio it accelerates exactly the surface drying that causes cracking, so it is the last thing to reach for.
Which climate is better for pottery?
Neither. Dry air gives fast turnaround, reliable bisque firings and crisp carved detail. Humid air gives forgiving trimming windows, far fewer cracks and easier large work. They trade different problems for different advantages.
How do I know which one I have?
Put a cheap humidity gauge where your work dries. Below about thirty percent, treat it as dry. Above about sixty, treat it as humid. The reading in your room matters far more than the climate on the map, because heating and air conditioning both shift it a long way.
Why is my glaze coming out too thin?
If your air is humid, the bisque is holding moisture and absorbing glaze slowly, so the usual dip lands starved. Warming or drying the bisque first restores its absorbency, and dipping a little longer also works.
Can I move a piece between climates?
Yes, with care, because the change is abrupt. Taking leather hard work from a humid studio into a heated car or house is a common way to crack it. Wrap it, and let it adjust gradually rather than unwrapping it on arrival.
Is winter drier even in a humid place?
Indoors, usually yes. Cold air holds little moisture, and heating it lowers the relative humidity further, so a heated studio anywhere can be very dry in midwinter. Potters in damp climates are often caught out by cracking for the first time in January.
How do I tell when something is truly bone dry?
Press it against your cheek. Cool means water is still evaporating out of it; room temperature means bone dry. Color is unreliable and hands are too insensitive. This matters most in humid climates, where pieces look dry long before they are.

Most potters never think about humidity until something fails, and then they take advice from somebody solving the opposite problem. That is how a person in a damp studio ends up double-wrapping work that already will not dry, and how a person in a dry one points a fan at a plate and loses it.
Put a gauge on the shelf, find out what your air actually does, and read every drying tip you meet with one question attached: is this person fighting speed, or fighting slowness? Once you know which side you are on, the rest of it sorts itself out.
