The Twisted Kitchen
The Twisted Kitchen, a whole counter of folded, spiraling pottery
BETA: these templates are still being tested
Every template keeps its BETA mark until someone builds it in clay and it checks out. Each one should be sound and work as drawn, so use them at your own discretion and be ready to adjust on the fly if a project needs it. Pivoting mid-build is part of the fun of pottery.
Members: be the first to show me one fully assembled and I’ll fire that piece free, with your name on its tile for good. See which templates are still up for grabs.

It started with one twisted olive oil bottle. Now there is a whole counter: its vinegar twin, salt and pepper shakers, a stacking salt cellar, cinnamon and sugar dredgers, a spice rack, a three quart pitcher, a utensil canister, a spoon rest and a butter dish, every one folded from the same flat faces.

Six flat faces, one crease each, and a little twist
Almost everything here starts as a ring of six flat faces. Each face folds once along its long diagonal, and each ring of corners turns a little past the one below it, so the creases spiral up the piece like a wrung towel. The butter dish and the spice rack fold the same faces round a long box instead, so their creases zigzag.
You never guess at an angle. Every edge on every paper prints the angle to tilt your knife, every fold gets a V groove on its dashed line, and each pack comes with a paper bevel gauge to set the blade. The pairs are true mirror twins, cut from flipped papers, so the oil and vinegar bottles, the salt and pepper shakers and the two dredgers spiral in opposite directions.
In my photos every piece wears its own glaze, and the folds still tie the set together. Glaze them all one color if you like. A glossy glaze that breaks lighter on the edges shows off every crease either way. Anything that holds food gets a food-safe glaze inside, and the vinegar bottle wants one that is safe with acids.

Print, check, roll, cut, build
Print at 100 percent
Actual size, never Fit to page. Plain copy paper works. Card stock survives a wet slab and can be used again.
Measure the square
Every sheet carries a 1 inch square. A ruler on it settles whether the print is right before any clay is cut.
Roll the slab
Each pack names its slab thickness on the cover. Let the slab firm up to soft leather hard, so it holds an edge and still bends.
Cut the count, then build
Lay the paper on the slab, cut straight down just outside the edge, bevel where the hatching says, and follow the numbered steps. Score, slip, press, compress, every seam.

The ones that come up
Which one should I start with
The spoon rest. It is Intermediate, one ring of six folded faces on a floor, about 90 minutes plus drying. Once that ring closes for you, every other piece in the set is the same move, taller or turned.
What do I need to buy
The two bottles each take a stainless bar pourer. The shakers and the dredgers take silicone plugs and a couple of small drill bits, and the spice rack holds eighteen square 4 oz spice jars. Each pack names the exact part and where to get it. Everything else is just clay.
How big are they
Out of the glaze kiln at 12 percent shrinkage, the oil and vinegar bottles stand 11 inches tall and hold about 21 ounces each, the pitcher stands 10 inches and holds about 3 quarts, and the utensil canister is 8 1/2 inches tall. The spice rack is 11 1/4 inches wide, the butter dish sits on a 7 5/8 inch plate, and the spoon rest is 5 inches across.
Are the pairs really mirrored
Yes. The vinegar bottle is the olive oil bottle with every face paper flipped, and the shakers and the dredgers come as left and right twins the same way. Stand each pair side by side and they spiral away from each other.
