Pottery Classes Near Cedar Hills, Utah
The Clay Hole is a community pottery studio in Draper, about twenty five minutes north of Cedar Hills. Wheels, hand building, slab molds, glazing and kiln time, all on one monthly membership.
Two point seven three square miles is not much room to find something new in. Membership is the only way in here, and there are no drop-in classes.
The drive from Cedar Hills
Down off the bench first. Cedar Hills sits above its neighbors, so the trip starts by dropping through Pleasant Grove or American Fork to the freeway.
- Down through Pleasant Grove or American Fork to I-15 at exit 275 or 276.
- North on I-15 over the Point of the Mountain to exit 289, Bangerter Highway.
- West on Bangerter to the 200 W exit, then right on 13490 S.

Twenty to twenty five minutes. Under ten of that is getting down to an on-ramp, and which way you go depends on which side of the slope you live on.
Nothing useful. No station in the city and the connections are not worth the time. This is a car trip.

Free and shared with a few other businesses. Anything not marked reserved is yours. Flat, too, which is not something your own street offers.
The smallest city on this list, and the only one getting smaller
Two point seven three square miles at four thousand nine hundred and thirty five feet, which makes this the highest of the cities we write about and the tightest. It sits on the lower slopes below Timpanogos, east of Highland.
The slope does the work. Orientation and grade change street to street, which is why two houses four hundred feet apart are worth different money and see different weather. Everyone who lives here can tell you which way their driveway faces.
And the numbers are going the other way from the rest of the county. Ten thousand and nineteen people at the 2020 count, nine thousand seven hundred and fifty five estimated for 2025. Down two point six percent while Saratoga Springs added sixty percent. Built out, and quietly thinning.
One thing that is not shrinking
The city golf course is not closing, whatever anybody told you. It is being rebuilt, with a new irrigation system and rebuilt tee boxes, reopening 9 March 2026 with nine holes plus the Short Course and the full eighteen expected by July and August. The Short Course stays open year round.
A big room, and everything in it is included
The studio runs to nearly 10,000 square feet. Membership covers the room, the equipment, the classes and the glaze. You buy clay by the bag and you pay for firing by the size of the piece. Nothing else is metered.

- 150+ underglazes alongside the glaze wall, plus dipping buckets on the higher levels.
- Bisque firing is free. Glaze firing is 5 cents a cubic inch, $4.80 minimum.
- Clay starts at $28 a 25 pound bag, and the discount grows with your level.
- Your own shelf to leave work on, which is the thing home potters never have.
When the whole city is under three square miles, everything is out
There is no version of living here where your evening happens inside the city limits. The canyon is up the road, the shops are down the hill, and the city itself is a golf course, some parks and a lot of well-kept streets on a slope.
So the question was never whether to drive. It is only ever which direction, and how long, and what is at the other end.
Over a third of the city is under eighteen and the median age is twenty seven point seven, which means most households here are running someone else's schedule most nights. An hour that is yours is worth the twenty minutes it costs.

- Open studio Friday evening and both weekend mornings, which fits around school sport.
- Four instructed classes a month at the lowest level, eight at the highest.
- Your own shelf, so a piece survives the two weeks between visits.
Four levels, one monthly price
Every level gets the same studio, the same equipment and the same glaze wall. What changes is how many instructed classes are included, how much shelf you get, and how much comes off a bag of clay.

Open studio time is on top of the included classes, at every level. Clay discounts run from nothing on Green Level up to $6 off each bag on Black Level.
The part we would rather you read now than find out later
There are no drop-in classes and no single sessions. Membership renews on the 25th of each month and canceling has to happen before the 24th. Fired work has to be collected within two weeks of the kiln being unloaded. And the cheapest level shows you a real fraction of what a busy month here looks like.
If that list makes membership the wrong shape for you, it is better to know in the first minute than in the fourth week.

SCERA Art Studios
Orem, about fifteen minutes south. Adult wheel pottery, teen wheel pottery including a homeschool section, and pottery for six to eleven year olds at $65 a month. It is a class program, not a studio: no open studio, no membership and they do not fire outside work.
For a family with kids in the eight to twelve range, SCERA in Orem is probably the better call than us, and it is cheaper. We start at fourteen, and only alongside a parent.

Most people who join have never touched a wheel. Every instructed class has instructors working the room, so nobody spends twenty minutes stuck and too polite to say so.
Can my teenager come with me?
Yes, from fourteen, and only alongside a parent who is also a member. In a city where more than a third of residents are under eighteen, that answer matters more than most.
What happens if you join this week
You pick a level, sign the waiver, and turn up to your first class. Somebody shows you where everything is, you get a shelf, and you put your hands in clay the same night. Most people who come from Cedar Hills and join here have never touched a wheel.
