Applying Alcohol Inks to Pottery
Alcohol ink is the fastest color in pottery and the least permanent. It never goes near a kiln, it moves on its own, and it will dissolve years later if it meets alcohol again. Eight ways to put it on, the sealing step that is not optional, and an honest account of what it will and will not survive.
Drop it on a glossy glazed pot, push it around with air, let it dry, then seal it properly. It is never fired. Unsealed, it rubs and fades. Sealed, it is decorative rather than functional, and it stays off anything that meets food.

Outside tables only
Alcohol ink is not used inside the studio. Ever. It goes on the tables outside, and so does everything that comes with it: the inks, the isopropyl, the blending solution and every sealer on this page.
The reason is simple. All of it is solvent based and none of it is fired. The fumes are strong, they hang around, and a shared room full of people working on other things is the wrong place for them.
Bring the piece out, work on it out there, and let it dry out there. If the weather makes that impossible, this is a project for another day.
It sits on top, and it never stops being ink
Alcohol ink is dye carried in alcohol. The alcohol evaporates and leaves the dye lying on the surface. Nothing bonds, nothing fires, nothing changes chemically.
Which means two things are true forever.
- More alcohol re-dissolves it. On the day you paint it, and five years later. That is why the first sealing coat has to be sprayed rather than brushed.
- Light fades it. It is a dye, not a pigment in glass, so a sunny windowsill will take the color out over a year or two.
Everything else on this page follows from those two sentences.
The route that works first time
Eight steps, on the outside tables, on a glossy glazed pot.
- Take it outside. Inks, alcohol, sealer, all of it.
- Wipe the pot with isopropyl and let it dry. Ink beads off a greasy glaze.
- Mask what you do not want colored. Rims and food surfaces get taped off now, not regretted later.
- Drop two or three colors on. Do not paint them. Let them land and sit.
- Push them around with air. A puffer, canned air or a straw. Never inhale through the straw.
- Add a drop of isopropyl where you want the color to open into a pale crater.
- Let it dry an hour, then leave it overnight before you touch it.
- Seal it. Three light spray coats, each one barely misting the surface. The first coat is the one that decides whether the whole thing survives.
Three things ruin nearly every piece
The first sealing coat was too wet
A heavy first coat, or a brushed one, re-dissolves the ink and drags your design into mud. The fix is three light mists from a distance, letting each one flash off, before anything heavier goes near it.
You painted instead of dropping
A brush pushed through wet ink lifts as much as it lays down and leaves streaks. Alcohol ink wants to be dropped and then moved with air. Brushes are for details, at the end, on dry ink.
You did not seal it at all
Unsealed ink rubs off on hands, lifts where it is handled and flakes as it ages. It looks fine for a week. It does not stay fine.
Read the limits, watch the hands
The application methods are easy to learn and fun to watch, which is why almost every alcohol ink video online is about the pretty part. The part that decides whether your piece is still good in a year is the sealing, and that gets about thirty seconds of most tutorials.

One honest framing before you start. If you want color that is permanently part of the pot, this is not the material. That is underglaze, it goes on before the glaze firing, and it lasts as long as the pot does. Alcohol ink is for pieces where the look is worth more than the durability.
What alcohol ink is, and is not
Six facts that explain every rule further down this page.
- It is dye, not pigment. Highly concentrated color dissolved in alcohol. Pigment sits as solid particles; dye goes into solution, which is why the colors are so transparent and why they fade in light.
- The alcohol is the whole delivery system. It evaporates in seconds to minutes, which is why the ink keeps moving after you stop touching it, and why the piece looks different five minutes later.
- Nothing bonds. Underglaze and glaze become part of the pot at cone 5½. Alcohol ink just lies on the surface, held there by nothing but being dry.
- Alcohol is also the undo button. Wipe with isopropyl and it comes off down to clean glaze. That is wonderful while you are working and a permanent liability afterward.
- It needs a non-porous surface to behave. Glossy glaze, glass, metal. On anything porous it soaks in on contact and stops flowing.
- It is not fired and never will be. There is no version of this that goes in a kiln. At bisque temperature the dye burns away and leaves nothing.
The honest comparison
Underglaze is permanent, food safe under a glaze, and limited to what survives cone 5½. Alcohol ink is spectacular, instant, endlessly variable and impermanent. They are not competing for the same job.
What it does on your glaze
The same three drops of ink behave like three different materials depending on what they land on. This decides your piece before you open a bottle.
Glossy glaze
The best surface and the one every video uses. Ink beads, runs, blooms and keeps moving. Colors stay brilliant and separate, and you can wipe the whole thing off and start over. If you are trying this for the first time, use a glossy pot.
Satin glaze
Slower and less dramatic. The ink still moves but grips sooner, so edges are softer and blooms are smaller. Harder to blow into big sweeps, easier to control. Colors read slightly duller than on gloss.
Matte glaze
Barely moves at all. The ink grabs where it lands and you get a stained, watercolor look rather than a flowing one. Some people prefer it. Nobody gets the poured marble effect on a matte pot, so do not go in expecting one.
Bare bisque
Porous, so the ink soaks straight in and stops. No flow, no blooms, and the color goes matte and chalky. It also cannot be wiped off, so every mark is final. Fine as a deliberate choice, frustrating as a surprise.
Crazed glaze
The ink wicks into every crack and draws the crazing as a colored web. It is either exactly what you wanted or a complete mess, and there is no middle ground and no way back.
Dark glazes
Alcohol ink is transparent, so a dark pot swallows most colors. Metallic and opaque mixatives are the exception and are the reason they exist. On anything dark, test on the foot ring first.
What you need
Bring your own. We do not stock any of this, and the whole kit is cheap compared to almost anything else in pottery.
- Three or four ink colors. Start with two you like together and one dark. They mix, so a small set goes further than it looks.
- Isopropyl alcohol, 91 percent. It thins, it moves color, it lifts mistakes, it cleans the pot first. The 70 percent bottle works but carries more water and dries slower. Blending solution is the branded version of the same idea and is not required.
- Something that blows air. A rubber puffer bulb, a can of compressed air, or a straw. The puffer is the most controllable and the cheapest.
- A felt applicator for stamping and dabbing color on, plus spare felt. A magic eraser cut into blocks does the same job.
- A pipette or dropper for placing drops of alcohol exactly where you want a crater.
- Gloves. Alcohol ink stains skin for days and takes scrubbing to shift.
- A sealer, chosen before you start rather than after. The sealing section explains which and why.
- Painter's tape to mask rims, foot rings and anything that meets a mouth or food.
Eight ways to put it on
Most pieces use three or four of these together. They are listed roughly in the order people learn them.
1. Dropping
Squeeze drops straight from the bottle onto the pot and let them find their own edges. The simplest method and the one that shows off what the material does. On a curved pot, gravity does half the work, so decide which way up it is going to sit while it dries.
2. Blowing
Push the wet ink outward with air. A puffer bulb gives short controlled bursts, canned air gives long sweeps, a straw gives the finest control. Blow across the surface rather than down at it, and never breathe in through the straw.
3. Alcohol dropping
Drop plain isopropyl into wet or nearly dry ink. It pushes the dye outward and leaves a pale crater with a dark rim. This is where most of the lacy, cellular look in alcohol ink work comes from.
4. Felt stamping
Load a felt pad with two or three colors plus a little alcohol, then press and lift repeatedly. Gives mottled, controlled color rather than flow, and is the most reliable way to cover a large area evenly.
5. Plastic wrap
Lay crumpled plastic wrap into the wet ink, press lightly and leave it until dry. The ink pools along every fold and dries into a sharp veined texture. Slow, and the most repeatable texture on this list.
6. Tilting and running
Flood an area, then turn the pot and let gravity pull the color into streaks. Good on vases and planters where a vertical drip reads as deliberate. Keep a paper towel under the foot.
7. Lifting back out
A cotton swab or a brush loaded with alcohol takes color away again. Use it for highlights, for cleaning an edge, or for rescuing an area that went muddy. Subtraction is as useful here as addition.
8. Detail on dry ink
Once everything is dry, a fine brush or an alcohol ink marker adds lines, dots and edges that stay where you put them. Doing this while the surface is still wet just lifts what is underneath.
The rule that ties them together
Alcohol ink is a material you steer rather than one you apply. Almost every method above is about moving color that is already on the pot. The people whose work looks best are usually doing less to it, not more.
Sealing, which is not optional
Unsealed alcohol ink rubs off on hands, lifts where the piece is held, and flakes as it ages. This is the section that decides whether your piece is still good next year.
- Wait longer than you think. Touch dry in minutes, properly dry overnight. Sealing ink that is still off-gassing traps solvent under the coat and clouds it.
- The first coat must be sprayed, not brushed. A brush drags across the ink and lifts it. So does a heavy spray. The first coat is a light mist from about a foot away that barely lands, left to flash off before the next one.
- Three light coats beat one good one. Each one seals a little more. By the third the surface is stable enough that heavier coats stop being dangerous.
- Spray varnish is the standard route. An archival UV varnish does the sealing and the light protection in one product. Krylon Kamar, which older tutorials recommend, was discontinued, so any guide telling you to start with it is out of date.
- Resin is for pieces that get handled. Coasters, trivets, anything that meets a hot mug. It is genuinely durable and it is also expensive, messy, needs a dust free space and three days to cure. Worth it for a set, overkill for a vase.
- Water based craft sealers are the usual disaster. The dishwasher safe craft glues in particular go on wet enough to dissolve the ink, and the internet is full of people finding that out on a finished piece. If you want to use one, it goes on top of three coats of spray varnish, never straight onto ink.
- Test on something you do not love. Ink a scrap tile at the same time as your piece and seal that one first. Ten minutes of patience against a whole afternoon of work.
Why the first coat is the whole game
Every sealing failure people report is the same failure. The first coat went on wet, the solvent in it re-dissolved the dye, and the design moved. Everything after that is just varnish over a ruined surface. Mist, wait, mist, wait, mist.
What goes wrong, and what caused it
The design moved when you sealed it
The first coat went on too wet, or it was brushed. Solvent in the sealer re-dissolved the dye. Three light mists from a distance, each allowed to flash off, is the only reliable way in.
The colors went muddy
Too many colors touching while wet, or a brush pushed through them. Alcohol ink mixes wherever it meets, and brown is where most combinations end up. Fewer colors, more space, less stirring.
The ink beaded up and would not spread
The glaze had oil on it. Wipe with isopropyl and let it dry before you start. A pot straight out of a cupboard has more on it than you would think.
It barely moved at all
The glaze is matte or satin, or the piece is bisque. That is the surface behaving normally rather than a mistake. Gloss is where the flow comes from.
It faded on the shelf
Dye plus daylight. A sunny windowsill will visibly pull color out inside a year. A UV varnish slows it down and nothing stops it. Keep the pieces you care about out of direct sun.
It flaked or peeled later
Unsealed, or sealed with something that never bonded. Alcohol ink holds onto glossy glaze by very little, and a sealer that sits on top without gripping takes the color with it when it lets go.
What you can claim afterward
This is the shortest list on any of our pages, because the answer to almost everything is no.
- Not food safe. Keep it off rims, inside surfaces and anywhere a mouth or food goes. Tape those areas before you start.
- Not dishwasher safe. Heat and detergent take it off, sealed or not.
- Not microwave safe once it is sealed, because the sealer is not.
- Not permanent. It fades in light and re-dissolves in alcohol, including the alcohol in perfume, hand sanitizer and hairspray.
- Hand wash only, gently, and only on the outside surfaces.
What it is genuinely good for
Planters, vases, ornaments, decorative tiles, lamp bases, the outside of a pot that holds dry things. Anywhere the piece is looked at rather than eaten off. Within that, it does things no fired material can do, and it does them in an afternoon.

The ones that come up at the tables
Can I fire alcohol ink?
No. It is a dye in alcohol with nothing in it that survives heat. Even a bisque firing burns it away completely and leaves bare glaze. If you want color that gets fired, that is underglaze, and it goes on before the glaze firing.
Can I do this inside the studio?
No. Alcohol ink, isopropyl and every sealer on this page are solvent based and none of it is fired. All of it happens on the outside tables, including the drying.
Can I drink from a mug I inked?
Only if the ink stayed well clear of the rim and the inside, and even then it is hand wash only. Tape the rim off before you start. It is much easier than regretting it afterward.
Do I really have to seal it?
If the piece will be handled, yes. Unsealed ink transfers to hands, lifts where it is gripped and flakes as it ages. A piece that sits untouched on a shelf can go unsealed, and it will still fade in light.
Why did my sealer wreck the design?
The first coat went on too wet or was brushed, and the solvent in it re-dissolved the dye. The first coat has to be a light spray mist from about a foot away, left to flash off before the next one. There is no way to repair it after the fact.
Will it work on bisque?
It will take the color but it will not flow. Bisque is porous, so the ink soaks in where it lands and dries chalky and matte. It also cannot be wiped off, so every mark is permanent. Some people love that. Just know which one you are choosing.
How do I fix a mistake?
Isopropyl on a paper towel, while it is unsealed. It comes off down to clean glaze and you can start again as many times as you like. That is the single best thing about this material, and it is also exactly why it has to be sealed.
Does it work over underglaze or a matte glaze?
Over a fired matte glaze it stains rather than flows, which can look good and will not marble. Over exposed underglaze it soaks in like bisque does. Both are usable, neither gives the effect people come to this material for.

Alcohol ink does something no fired material can. Colors bloom into each other in ways nobody can plan, it takes an afternoon instead of two weeks, and a pot that was not working often becomes the best thing on your shelf.
What it will not do is last the way a glaze lasts. So use it on the pieces where that trade is worth making, tape off anything that meets a mouth, and spend the extra hour on the sealing. That hour is the difference between a piece you still like next year and one you quietly stop displaying.
