The Risks Every Potter Should Know

Pottery is a safe craft practiced carelessly by almost everyone at some point. The dangers are real, slow and easy to ignore, and nearly all of them are solved by habits that cost nothing. Here is the honest list, in order of how much it actually matters.

Dust is the one that will actually hurt you, and it builds up over years. Everything else on this list is either obvious or rare. Clean wet, mask up for dry work, respect the kiln, and lift with your legs.

The dangerous one is the boring one

The hazards that feel dramatic are the ones least likely to hurt you. A kiln at full temperature looks alarming and almost never injures anybody, because everyone treats it with respect.

The one that does real damage is dust, and it does it slowly enough that nothing ever feels wrong. No moment of pain, no obvious mistake, just years of small unprotected exposures adding up to lung damage that does not reverse.

Which means the safety habit that matters most is the least exciting one available: clean wet, and put a mask on before you touch anything dry.

  1. Silica dust. The only thing on this list that causes permanent, untreatable damage, and the only one that builds invisibly. Everything else is an accident; this one is an accumulation.
  2. Your back and wrists. Far and away the most common thing that actually stops people making pots. Bad wheel height, bad posture, too many hours, no breaks.
  3. Lifting. Bags of clay, full buckets, loaded kiln shelves. Boring, common, and it ends sessions.
  4. Burns and the kiln. Rare, because people are already careful. Still worth knowing where the heat is and what a hot shelf looks like.
  5. Machinery. Slab rollers, wheels, wedging tables. Pinch points rather than blades, and they are not casual injuries.
  6. Chemicals. Real but overstated for most members, because the risk is almost entirely in dry powder, which brings you back to number one.
Worth knowing

Three things people ignore

Sweeping

A broom puts more dust in the air than the job that made it. It is the single worst habit in ceramics and the easiest to fix. Wet mop, damp sponge, or a HEPA vacuum. Never a broom, never compressed air.

Wheel height

Most people never adjust it and then wonder why their back hurts after six months. If you are hunched over, the wheel is too low or your seat is too low. This is the most common injury in pottery and it is entirely preventable.

Taking clothes home covered in dry clay

Dust does not stay at the studio. It goes into your car, your washing machine and your house. Change or brush off outside, and wash studio clothes separately.

Dust, and why it outranks everything else

Clay and glaze both contain crystalline silica. Wet, it is harmless. Airborne and breathed in over years, it scars lung tissue permanently, and there is no treatment that undoes it.

  1. The particles that matter are invisible. Respirable silica is small enough to bypass the nose and throat entirely and reach the deepest part of the lung. You cannot see it, and the visible dust on a bench is not the part doing the damage.
  2. It hangs in the air for hours. Long after the sanding stopped, the fine fraction is still suspended. Which is why the person who walks in afterward is also exposed.
  3. The damage is cumulative and permanent. Silicosis is scarring, not irritation. It does not heal, and once enough has built up there is no treatment beyond managing symptoms.
  4. It comes from specific jobs, not from pottery generally. Sanding dry work, scraping dried clay, sweeping, weighing raw glaze powder, cleaning kiln shelves. Wet throwing produces none.
  5. Honest context. Silicosis is well documented in industrial ceramics and uncommon in studio potters who buy premixed clay and clean wet. The people at real risk are those who mix dry materials without protection for years. That is not most members here, and it is not a reason to skip the habits.
  6. The fix is boring and nearly free. Wet cleaning, a fitted respirator for dry jobs, and not sweeping. Three habits cover almost the entire exposure.

What the studio already does

We buy clay premixed rather than mixing dry, which removes the dustiest job in ceramics entirely. Cleaning here is wet. If you see a broom coming out, that is worth saying something about, and nobody will take it badly.

The obvious one

Kilns: heat, fumes and electricity

Everyone respects a kiln, which is exactly why kilns hurt so few people. The risks worth knowing are the less obvious ones.

Fumes during firing

Organics, carbonates and colorants burn off as the kiln climbs, giving off carbon monoxide, sulfur compounds and other gases. This is why kilns are vented and why you do not linger next to one that is burning off. A dust mask does nothing here.

Radiant heat and your eyes

Looking into a peephole at a kiln near temperature exposes your eyes to intense infrared. Brief glances are how people check cones; staring is how people damage their eyes over years. Shaded glasses if you are looking often.

Shelves and furniture

Kiln shelves are heavy, awkward and abrasive, and they stay hot long after the kiln reads cool. The burns that happen in studios are mostly from shelves and posts, not from the kiln itself.

Opening too early

Tempting and a bad idea in both directions. Thermal shock cracks the work, and a shelf that reads safe on the outside can still be hot enough to burn. Wait it out.

Electricity

Kilns draw serious current on dedicated circuits. Damaged elements, worn connections and scorched receptacles are a fire risk rather than a shock risk, and the answer is that only trained staff work on them.

Who touches ours

Loading, firing and unloading our kilns is staff work. That is not gatekeeping for its own sake; it is the one piece of equipment here where a mistake is expensive, dangerous, or both.

Proportionate, not alarmist

Chemicals, and what actually deserves respect

Glaze materials get talked about as though the bucket is dangerous. The bucket is not the problem. The dry powder before it goes in the bucket is.

  1. Wet glaze on your hands is not an emergency. Wash it off. Nothing in a normal studio glaze absorbs meaningfully through intact skin in the time it takes to rinse.
  2. Dry powder is the whole risk. Weighing silica, feldspar, frits and colorants is the one job where a real respirator matters, because you are putting fine material into the air at face height.
  3. Manganese deserves extra care. It carries the strongest warnings of the common colorants and it gasses as it fires. Be strictest with this one.
  4. Barium and lithium compounds are the ones to handle by the label. Both are genuinely toxic in raw form, both are used in real recipes, and both are fine once melted into a stable glaze.
  5. Solvents are a different category. Alcohol inks and the Pebeo paints are not dust; they are vapor, and a particulate filter does nothing for them. That is why they are used on the outside tables here.
  6. Fired and melted is stable. A properly fired glaze on a vitrified pot is inert, which is how ceramics has held food for thousands of years. The risk is in the handling, not the finished object.

The label is the instruction

Every material worth worrying about arrives with a safety sheet, and the interesting information is on it. If a jar says something you have not read, read it once. It takes two minutes and it beats remembering a rule of thumb from a forum.

Pinch points, not blades

Machines that can hurt you

Nothing in a pottery studio spins fast enough to cut you. What they do is trap, crush and pull, which is a different kind of injury and a more serious one.

The slab roller

The most genuinely dangerous machine here. Heavy rollers with real force behind them and a gap that will take a hand. Keep fingers away from the rollers, never reach in while it is moving, and do not let anybody use it without being shown first.

The wheel

Low speed, high torque. Long hair, sleeves, necklaces and apron strings are the hazard, not the wheel head. Tie it back, roll it up, take it off.

Pug mills and mixers

Augers are unforgiving and every serious pottery injury story involves one. They have guards for a reason, and reaching into one that is plugged in is how people lose fingers.

Grinders and sanding

Eye protection, always. Grinding a kiln-wadded foot throws sharp particles at speed, and it is also a dry dust job, so the mask goes on too.

Needle tools and fettling knives

Tiny, sharp, and usually found by hand at the bottom of a tool bucket. More studio blood comes from these than from any machine.

The rule that covers all of it

Do not use a machine you have not been shown how to use. Asking takes a minute and nobody here minds being asked.

The one that stops people

Your back, wrists and hands

This is what actually ends pottery careers, and almost nobody treats it as a safety issue until it has already happened.

  1. Wheel height is the main lever. If you are curled over the wheel, either it is too low or your seat is. Raising the wheel on blocks, or raising yourself, changes more than any amount of stretching.
  2. Sit with your feet flat and your back supported. Perching on a stool with your legs splayed and your spine in a C is the standard throwing posture and it is terrible for you.
  3. Centering is a whole-body job. Brace your arms against your body and your body against the wheel, and use your frame rather than your wrists. People who center with wrist strength develop wrist problems.
  4. Break every half hour. Stand up, straighten out, shake your hands. The damage comes from holding one position, not from the work itself.
  5. Lift bags of clay properly. Legs, not back, and split a bag rather than carrying a full one awkwardly. Full buckets are worse than clay bags because the weight moves.
  6. Cold water and wet hands all day stiffens joints and cracks skin. Warm water where you can, and a barrier cream if your hands split in winter.

If something already hurts

Pain that persists past a session is worth taking to a doctor or a hand therapist rather than working through. Repetitive strain in wrists and shoulders responds well to early changes and badly to being ignored for a year.

Minor, frequent

The small stuff that adds up

Wet floors

Clay and water make a surface with roughly the grip of ice. Most studio falls happen within a few feet of a sink or a wheel. Mop spills rather than stepping around them.

Broken bisque and fired shards

Fired ceramic breaks into genuinely sharp pieces. Sweep it up with a dustpan and a damp cloth rather than fingers, and do not put it in a bag somebody will later reach into.

Dry skin and cracked fingertips

Clay pulls moisture out of skin all day. Splits at the fingertips are common in winter, they hurt more than they should, and barrier cream before and after fixes most of it.

Reclaim that has gone bad

Old wet reclaim grows mold, which smells awful and can irritate lungs and skin. It also improves the clay, which is the strange part. Keep the bucket lidded and do not stick your face in it.

Taking it home on your clothes

Dry clay on an apron becomes dust in your car and your house. Brush off outside, change if you can, and wash studio clothes separately from everything else.

Eating and drinking at the bench

A mug on a glazing table picks up whatever is on that table. Keep food and drink away from anywhere raw materials are handled, which is the single easiest rule on this page.

Proportion

What is overblown

Safety writing loses people by treating everything as equally urgent. Some of what circulates is genuinely overstated, and saying so makes the real warnings land harder.

  1. Touching wet clay and glaze. Routinely described as dangerous. It is not. Wash your hands, keep it out of cuts, and do not eat it. That is the whole precaution.
  2. Every glaze being a poison risk. Commercial glazes sold as food safe, applied and fired properly, are stable. The genuine concerns are underfired glaze, crazing and a handful of specific raw materials, all covered above.
  3. Needing a mask at all times. Wearing one to throw wet clay is theater, and it trains people to ignore the instruction when it actually matters.
  4. Kilns as constant fire hazards. An installed, maintained kiln with correct clearances, fired by people who know it, is an appliance. Home setups in cluttered garages are where the real stories come from.
  5. Silicosis as an inevitability. It is a real, permanent, untreatable disease and it is also uncommon among studio potters who buy premixed clay and clean wet. Both halves of that sentence are true and both are worth saying.

Why this section exists

If everything is presented as dangerous, people sort it out for themselves by ignoring most of it, usually including the parts that mattered. Knowing which warnings are load-bearing is itself a safety skill.

The ones that come up at the tables

Is pottery actually dangerous?

Not especially, and it has one genuine long-term hazard that deserves respect. Dust is the one that causes permanent damage, and it is entirely manageable with wet cleaning and a mask for dry work. Everything else is ordinary workshop caution.

Is it safe to have wet clay on my hands all day?

Yes. Wash it off afterward, keep it out of open cuts, and use a barrier cream if your skin dries and splits. The hazard in ceramics is airborne dry material, not wet clay on skin.

What is the most dangerous machine in the studio?

The slab roller, followed by anything with an auger. They are crushing hazards rather than cutting ones, and both are safe when used the way you were shown and unforgiving when they are not.

Can I stand near the kiln while it is firing?

Passing by is fine. Working next to one during burn-off is not, because that is when organics and carbonates are giving off gases. Ours are vented, and the sensible habit is still not to spend an hour beside a kiln that is climbing.

My back hurts after throwing. Is that normal?

Common, not normal, and usually a setup problem rather than a fitness one. Check your wheel and seat height first, then your posture, then how long you are going without standing up. If it persists past a session, see a doctor rather than working through it.

Should I worry about glaze chemicals?

Respect the dry powder and relax about the wet bucket. Weighing raw materials is the job that needs a respirator. Once a glaze is mixed, applied and fired properly, it is stable, which is the entire basis of ceramics being used for food.

Is the mold in old reclaim a problem?

It smells worse than it is, and it genuinely improves the clay's plasticity. Keep the bucket covered, do not put your face over it, and wash your hands. If you react badly to mold generally, wear gloves and let somebody else wedge the old stuff.

Do I need to change clothes before going home?

Changing is ideal, brushing off outside is the realistic minimum. Dry clay on clothing becomes dust wherever you go next, and washing studio clothes with everything else spreads it through the machine.

One last thing

Nothing here is a reason not to make pots

Every craft has a list like this. Woodworkers have blades and fine dust, metalworkers have heat and fumes, and potters have silica and their own backs. None of it makes the craft unsafe; it makes it a craft with things worth knowing.

The thing that separates a studio where people stay healthy from one where they do not is not equipment or rules. It is eight small habits done without thinking about them. Pick up the mop instead of the broom, set your wheel at the right height, and the rest of this page mostly takes care of itself.

Dust is the one that does lasting damage, and wet cleaning plus a mask for dry jobs removes nearly all of it. Your back is the one most likely to stop you, and wheel height fixes most of that. Everything else is ordinary caution.
