Some days you do not want to make the pot. You want to glaze the pot.
Six large pieces, thrown and bisqued and sitting on the shelf. Pick one, rinse it, and spend your whole session on the part you actually came in for.

Check the shelf before you pay. These are one-off pieces, not stock, and the outside textures vary a lot within a shape. Find the exact one you want with a staff member, then buy it. In-studio purchase only. We do not ship any of this. If you are not a member standing in the building, this one is not for you.
Before you buy
Four things that are true about every piece on that shelf, and every one of them is easier to hear now than after checkout.
Buy the piece you looked at
Outside textures vary a lot from piece to piece inside the same shape. Two XXL serving bowls can look like different products. Pick up the actual one you want before you pay for a category.
Make sure we still have it
These are one-offs. When a shape sells out it is gone until we make more, and the website is not a live count of what is on the shelf. Ask a staff member first.
They carry maker’s marks
This collection was made before the studio existed, so every piece has our studio and personal maker’s marks stamped in the bottom. Future batches will not. If you want a piece that reads as entirely yours, that is worth knowing before you glaze it.
The glaze firing is still yours
The price covers the bisqueware. Glazing it and running it through a glaze firing is billed the same way every firing on your own work is billed, and a 17 inch platter is a lot of cubic inches.
Glazing something this big
A wide flat interior is the least forgiving surface in the studio. It shows every brush stroke, every thin patch and every drip, at a size nobody can miss.
Rinse it and let it dry
Bisque that has been on a shelf collects dust, and dust under glaze comes out of the kiln as a crawl. Rinse it, wipe it, and let it dry all the way through before the first coat goes on.
Three even coats, not two thick ones
At this scale a thin spot reads as a stripe. Build it up evenly and let each coat lose its shine before the next one, and keep your loaded brush moving in one direction across the floor of the piece.
Wipe the foot properly
Twice. A running glaze on a 17 inch platter welds itself to a kiln shelf across a very large area, and that is an expensive afternoon for everybody.
Give a moving glaze room
Our flux glazes are designed to move, and a piece this wide gives them a lot of room to move across. Keep them well back from the rim and further back from the foot than you think you need to.
Berlin Gray changes the answer
It is a darker body, so the same glaze reads deeper and cooler on it than it does on B-Mix. Anything translucent will shift the most. If you have a test tile on that clay, look at it first.
Plan for how it will be seen
A serving bowl is looked into. A flat platter is looked down at. The interior is the whole piece on both, so put the effort where the eye lands rather than on an exterior nobody will see once it is on a table.
