Wheel Throwing Classes for First-Time Potters in Draper
Have you always wanted to try the pottery wheel? At The Clay Hole in Draper, we specialize in helping first-time potters get started with confidence, clarity, and a whole lot of messy fun. Our structured weekly classes are the perfect place to start your clay journey.
Unlike one-time pottery experiences, our monthly membership model gives you the chance to build skill over time—no pressure, no starting over each week. You’ll learn the entire process, from throwing to trimming to glazing, and watch your own progress unfold.
What You’ll Learn as a First-Time Potter
- How to center clay and control the wheel
- Forming basic shapes like cups and bowls
- How to trim and finish your pieces
- Introduction to glazing and surface decoration
- Studio etiquette, safety, and setup
We keep class sizes small so you’ll never feel lost, and our instructors are here to help every step of the way.
“I had never touched a pottery wheel before my first class. The Clay Hole made it feel easy and fun, and now I look forward to every week!”

Do I need any experience?
Nope! We love working with beginners. Your first class will walk you through the basics step-by-step.
Will I actually make something?
Yes! Most beginners finish their first month with multiple pieces ready to glaze and take home.
Is this better than a one-time pottery event?
Absolutely. A single class can only show you the surface. With us, you’ll develop real skill and come away with something you’re proud of.
