Making Friends as an Adult in Utah Through Pottery

Making friends as an adult is hard. Once you’re out of school, out of church, or done with the social momentum of your twenties, finding meaningful connection can feel nearly impossible. Especially here in Utah, where social circles are often tight and built through religious or family networks, it’s easy to feel like you missed your window.

That’s where weekly pottery classes at The Clay Hole come in. They’re more than just a creative outlet—they’re a proven, community-based way to build real friendships that stick.

Why It’s So Hard to Make Friends as an Adult

The research backs it up: adults need a surprising amount of time together to form close bonds. A 2018 study out of the University of Kansas found it takes about 90 hours to become friends and more than 200 hours to build true closeness. One-time events don’t cut it. Casual coffee meetups don’t either.

To really build friendship, you need consistency. Shared experience. Time together, again and again, in a setting where you can relax, open up, and be yourself.

Pottery Is the Perfect Friendship-Building Activity

Unlike awkward mixers or pressure-filled “networking” events, pottery creates side-by-side connection. You don’t have to make eye contact or small talk. You just show up, sit at the wheel (or hand-building table), and create. Over time, conversations happen naturally. Trust forms. And friendships grow.

  • You see the same people every week
  • You bond through shared creative progress
  • You talk (or don’t) with no pressure
  • You build trust over hours spent side-by-side

As the Mayo Clinic points out, strong friendships don’t just feel good—they actually improve your health, reduce stress, and increase your sense of belonging and purpose.

Weekly Classes That Make Friendship Possible

At The Clay Hole, our monthly membership includes one 3.5-hour class per week. That consistency is exactly what friendship needs to grow.

  • Monday Morning: 10:30 AM – 2:00 PM
  • Monday–Friday Evenings: 6:30 PM – 10:00 PM

No contracts. No pressure. Just clay, creativity, and the same group of adults showing up week after week—and becoming friends in the process.
