When the World Feels Scary, Find Your Third Space

I dunno. It seems everyone in my world is so anxious and scared right now. Do you all feel that, too?

Listen, I know we JUST started a series to make giant bowls. But… I’m canceling it.

With everything currently going on in this country and the rest of the world, it just doesn’t feel right to share months of self-enriching content right now.

It feels more right to put 100% of my social media focus on building real community and bringing as many good humans as I can closer together.

I built The Clay Hole to be a truly wonderful third space for whomever needed that community and that escape here in Utah.

This place was designed from the ground up to be a community first, pottery second business. I built a space that is great whether you’re a social butterfly or you’re replete with social anxiety. The Clay Hole lets people of every personality type find their epic little corners to work in, whether that’s as lone wolves or in groups of wonderful, similar humans.

If you’ve never heard of a third space, look it up. Everyone needs a safe third space, now more than ever before. If you’re in Utah, come see if this particular third space fits you.

Sigh. Utah. A lot of scary headlines have been coming from this state the last couple weeks, so believe me when I say that I see the irony (or maybe the beauty?) of pitching a safe haven in a place that hasn’t been so safe of late.

Here in Utah, we’re a bit shaken. We’re not used to headlines like these happening. Not here. We tend to live simple and safe lives on average. Yet, the big headlines have been happening here and that’s a pill we’ve all gotta swallow.

And while scary things have been building slowly all year, in just the last couple weeks a very heavy, very weird, and very unsettling anxiety has settled in that is making so many people put their entire lives on hold. The general feeling I’m picking up on is that people just don’t feel good spending money, making new plans, finding new hobbies, or even going out and about until they have a more certain idea of where the world is going to land in all of this.

And that, right there, is why I’m canceling the big bowl series and instead focusing on everything fun, amazing, and third space building that The Clay Hole is for our members.

There aren’t going to be answers of where we’re going to land any time soon. If anything, there will only be more uncertainty, more calamity, and more headlines to shake us.

And because of that, if there ever was a time to focus on making sure people knew that there is this amazing place here in Utah to come, be themselves, enjoy life for a few hours every week, and just feel safe and okay, THIS is that time.

It doesn’t feel right to spend two months saying “look at our pretty bowls, now buy them!”

It feels right to spend two a few months making sure every person who watches our videos knows what The Clay Hole is all about. To let them know we want them here. They’re welcome here.

So, that’s what we’re going to do. Join us if it calls to you.

Now to go brainstorm with my team how to do just that…
