The king finally has company: almost 18 inches of faceted Staunton queen, from the stepped plinth to the ball on top. Her crown flares into a ring of sixteen sharp points, and every facet catches the light differently as you walk past. She takes about 12 lb of clay, about 16 hours over six sittings and three weeks of slow drying, and she needs a kiln with 19 inches of clear height.

Finished: 17 7/8 in tall, 7 7/8 in across the base, about 7 lb at 12 percent shrinkage.

In the pack

9 template sheets, every piece whole at exact size, with a 1 inch check square on each

The pieces: Floor (cut 1), Plinth (cut 4), Cove (cut 4), Base ring (cut 4), Base ring top (cut 4), Shoulder (cut 4), Lower stem (cut 4), Upper stem (cut 2), Collar (cut 1), Collar top (cut 1), Crown neck (cut 2), Lower crown (cut 2), Upper crown (cut 4), Dome (cut 2), Dome top (cut 1), Ball underside (cut 1), Ball (cut 1), Ball top (cut 1), Ball cap (cut 1), Point (cut 1)

One page on printing, rolling and the seam method

Assembly in 38 numbered steps, then drying, glazing and what goes wrong

A size table at 10, 12 and 14 percent shrinkage

Free for members, logged in to a Clay Hole account. $50 for everyone else.
