Pottery, Laughter, and Real Connection — With Dan Pearce

Sure, you could learn pottery anywhere.

But when you come to this retreat, you’re not just signing up for classes — you’re stepping into the studio alongside Dan Pearce (and Courtney, who you know all so well).

Dan’s walked through every step of pottery with millions of people online, but here’s the secret:

Dan and his team of instructors teach and treat you like the artist you are — not as a student. From the first moment, you’ll feel what so many of his members and followers already know: you belong here. Your creativity is substantial. And you’re going to make something amazing.

What to expect:

Real hands-on time with Dan and his team — demos, projects, side-by-side coaching

Personal feedback that lifts you up and pushes your creativity further

Stories, laughter, and real connection — not boring lectures

A vibe that’s pure encouragement, zero intimidation

Dan shows up with his full heart — every workshop, every project, every event.

You’ll get the real Dan: the artist, the teacher, the mentor, and the guy who believes the best pottery doesn’t come from perfection... it comes from play, courage, and getting all sorts of muddy.

This retreat is your chance to do something truly rare and fulfilling: sit at the table, pick up a bag of fresh clay, and create incredible ceramic art right alongside Dan Pearce.

What is a Clay Hole Pottery Retreat?

It’s part creative playground, part soul recharge.

For 6-9 days, you’ll dive into clay with daily workshops, relaxed evening sessions with our regularly scheduled classes, and endless room to explore.

With no pottery experience (or plenty of pottery experience), you'll be led through a creative experience to create next-level, high-end, high-value pieces with masterful finishes.

No grades. No pressure. No wrong way to do it.

Just you, some fresh mud, glaze streaking your cheeks, a few new lifelong friends, and the simple joy of making.

What you'll create at the retreat:

These are the projects we'll tackle. All with your own design, flare, and creativity, of course...

Workshops, Pottery, Parties — Oh My

This workshop is loaded with value and good times. Here's what you'll get. Expand any section to learn more.

✨ Daily pottery workshops (six different incredible high-value projects)

View the section above to see which pieces everyone will work on. All your final pieces will have your flair and personality in them. Those who stay for the raku portion of the workshop will get an additional six raku pieces to go along with the six listed above.

🌙 Evening open studio time (come and go, relax and play, totally optional)

We have open studio classes that run every night Monday through Friday from 6:30PM to 10PM. You'll be welcome to join in any or all of them (with the exception of Friday, which you must be single to attend).

🏺 Special project tracks — create stunning pieces you’ll be proud of

While there's no way to have a workshop like this, where you create every piece from the ground up, we will have a perfect mix of initial creation to projects where you take over from the initial stage. These project tracks are designed to get you from beginning to end during the workshop. And if you ever fall behind, feel free to come to the optional pottery classes to finish what you are working on!

🛠️ Full access to nearly 10,000 ft2 of tools, glazes, and clay

While you're here, you'll have full "Purple Level" access. That's one of our top membership levels that gives you access to the vast majority of our tools and glazes. You'll have plenty of space to stretch out, do your thing, and still forge the friendships that naturally occur with other participants.

🍴 One catered meal per day (because muddy hands shouldn’t cook)

We will break for a one-hour catered lunch every day. On the free day, you will need to take care of your own lunch.

🎉 Group hang-out/party at Dan's house (it’s gonna be as fun as it sounds)

Friendships are started in the studio, and they gain lifelong potential when we all hang out together off the clock. We'll potluck style an epic night of fun, drinking (optional), games, and hanging out. It's gonna be good for the soul.

🛋️ Beautiful lounging spaces to recharge between sessions

Social anxiety? Overwhlem? Just need a break? No prob. Hang out in any of our many nice sofa-clad lounge areas to escape whenever you feel a need.

🙋🏻‍♀️ Hang out and learn from Dan, Courtney, and the rest of the Clay Hole team

You've followed along with us on social media. Now come dive into the mud with us! The energy is as good as you hope at The Clay Hole, and Dan & Courtney will be there for the whole of this workshop. We will also have other highly qualified instructors helping us help you through from beginning to end.

🔥 Optional 3-day workshop extension for an epic raku adventure

And, of course, if you want the full shebang experience, opt for the full 9-day workshop, which includes three days of raku pottery. You'll get to do standard raku as well as "horsehair raku," which is where you put things like horse hair, feathers, sugar, etc on your raku pottery.

Frequently asked questions

I've never done pottery before. Will I be able to keep up?

Most people who come to these retreats are going to be complete beginners. You'll get all the demos, guidance, and support you need with no need for any prior pottery experience!

What if I'm not overly "creative"?

You don't have to be! Curiosity and desire to do this is all it takes. We'll show you the rest and we'll be there every step of the way to help you make all the best creative decisions (if you want our help with that).

Is food, lodging, or travel included?

Lodging and travel to and from the event is not included. You will need to find your own accommodations. Transportation during the workshop is also not included. We recommend renting a car for the duration of your stay.

One meal per day (lunch) will be included. You will be on your own for breakfast, dinner, and snacks. Many participants will go out to dinner with their classmates some or most nights.

How do the evening pottery classes work?

We have open studio classes that run every night Monday through Friday from 6:30PM to 10PM. You'll be welcome to join in any or all of them (with the exception of Friday, which you must be single to attend).

Is there an age limit?

Minimum age to attend is 14. Minors must be accompanied by a legal guardian who is also enrolled in the workshop.

What do I need to bring with me every day?

Honestly, just a pottery apron and an awesome can-do attitude.

What if I can’t make these dates?

If there's enough interest, we will host a second retreat in mid-to-late September. Get on the waiting list here:

Is there anything special to know if I want to be part of the raku portion of the workshop?

Raku is such a magical experience. You'll want to bring close-toed shoes, long sleeve shirts/jeans, and sunscreen because we'll be out in the summer sun for a couple days.

Will I take home my pottery?

In short, no. All participants are required to pay shipping and materials to have their pieces sent to them. The only exception is participants of the full 9-day workshop, who can come on the 10th day for the big kiln unloading and may take their pieces with them if they desire. Any pottery whose shipping/material expense is not paid within two weeks of notification will be forfeit and become the property of The Clay Hole.

How many people will be in attendance?

The Clay Hole can fit up to 40 people for events like this quite comfortably. Our plan is to only allow 20 attendees, but we reserve the right to raise or lower that number as we see fit. We want our participants to have a truly wonderful time and we do our best to make sure the right size group is part of that.

For the three-day option, what does "unfinished pieces" mean?

It means you're coming to the retreat to learn all the building, carving, sgraffito, Mishima, sprig, geometric slicing, and lantern carving techniques and you won't be part of the glazing workshops.

You can opt to leave your unfinished pieces behind, or pay to have them shipped to you once they've been bisque-fired so that you can glaze and finish them at your local studio.

Can I cancel or get a refund on my registration?

You can cancel participation at any time. Sorry, no refunds for any reason. Please only register if you're sure you can make it.

🔥 Step Into the Wild Side of Pottery

What if your pottery didn’t just get fired — it came alive?

The 9-Day retreat includes everything in the standard experience plus three unforgettable days dedicated to the art of raku pottery.

Raku firing is pure, thrilling magic. Here's the extreme nutshell version:

You pull your red-hot pottery straight from the kiln

You plunge it into sawdust, newspaper, or other consumables where it immediately all bursts into flames

After it cools in a reduction atmosphere, you plunge it into cold water and watch the colors and crackles explode across your pieces

Every raku piece is one-of-a-kind — shaped not just by your hands, but by fire, smoke, and earth.

What’s Included in the Raku Workshop Add-On?

Dedicated Raku-Specific Pottery Projects
You'll create a full set of x6 pieces designed specifically for live raku and horsehair firings — fast, wild, and full of soul.

Personal Coaching From Dan, Courtney, & The Clay Hole Team
You’ll be coached through every step: from glazing choices to pulling molten-hot pieces from the kilns with your own hands.

Full Live Raku Firings Using Real Reduction Chambers
Load, pull, and flash-fire your pottery in real-world raku kilns — not demos, you’ll be doing the real thing yourself.

Advanced Glazing Demos and Techniques
Learn layering, resist work, and firing chemistry that takes your pieces beyond anything you could do in a regular kiln.

The Ancient, Wild Side of Pottery
Feel connected to centuries of potters who shaped clay and fire by hand, trusting in chaos to create beauty.

Two Full Days of Firing Madness
One day dedicated to traditional raku, one day dedicated to rare horsehair raku — two completely different styles, two completely unforgettable experiences.

Hands-On, Heart-In, All-Out
You'll not just observe — you'll be fully immersed in the process, the adrenaline, the teamwork, and the celebration.

Why Raku?

Instant, Dramatic, Stunning Results
Watch vivid metallics, deep crackles, smoky patterns, and impossible textures emerge before your eyes — within minutes.

Unrepeatable Beauty
No two raku pieces can ever be recreated. Each one is a frozen moment of fire, air, smoke, and luck — truly one of a kind.

Adrenaline, Laughter, and a Little Bit of Chaos
Raku is high-energy, fast-paced, and slightly wild — but always under the careful safety guidance of our experienced instructors.

Bragging Rights
Most potters dream about doing real raku. You’ll be able to say, "I’ve pulled a pot from a fire kiln at 1,800 degrees — and lived to tell the story with most of my eyelashes still in place."

Deeper Artistic Freedom
Raku demands you let go of control and trust your instincts — a powerful artistic transformation most people never experience.

Who is Raku for?

It's for you. It's your creative victory lap at this retreat.

If you felt alive during the first six days, the raku extension is where you ignite that spark into full-on flame.

You don't need to be "advanced." You just need to be willing to jump in, embrace the unknown, and have the time of your life.

Perfect for:

  • Beginners craving the ultimate pottery experience
  • Adventurers who love a little adrenaline with their creativity
  • Anyone who wants pottery memories (and pieces) they'll never forget

What Makes Raku Different From Regular Pottery?

Regular pottery is patient, slow, controlled.

Raku is fast, hot, unpredictable, fiery.

In raku, you’re standing next to live kilns, pulling red-hot pottery out of the flames with gloves and tongs, and transforming it instantly.

The marks, colors, crackles, and patterns you create can never be planned or duplicated — it’s pure art, birthed in the moment.

Once you experience it, you’ll never look at pottery the same way again.

Bonus: What You'll Walk Away With

3 stunning standard raku-fired pots

3 hauntingly beautiful horsehair raku pots

Knowledge of glazing, resists, firing, and finishing you can’t learn in a normal class

A creative fire inside you that won’t go out anytime soon 🔥
